At around 5 a.m. on May 11, during a routine patrol, a Bowie police officer saw a green Buick LeSabre driving on the wrong side of Mitchellville Road near Harbor Way.

The officer began following the car, which was described as “driving at a high rate of speed,” when the car sped through a steady red traffic signal at Mitchellville Road and Harbor Way.

The officer attempted to pull over the car, but the driver would not stop and continued speeding down Mitchellville Road and ran another red light at the intersection the Collington Road.

Police lost sight of the car briefly when it appeared to make left onto Excalibur Road from Mitchellville Road. Upon arriving at that intersection, the officer saw a car had lost control and struck a traffic signal, severely damaging the car. The officer also observed a suspect described as “black male with no shirt and a backpack” feeling the accident in the direction of Excalibur Court.

Two other people were in the car and detained briefly before being sent to Prince George’s Hospital Center to be treated for injuries associated with the crash.

Police blocked off the area and began searching for the suspect. They also searched the car and found what they believed to be stolen property.

Shortly after police began their search, dispatch received a call reporting that a shirtless man was seen running in a wooded area to the rear of the 3700 block of Excalibur Court. Police searched the area and were unable to find the suspect, but they did locate a black backpack. A search of the backpack revealed 116 grams of suspected marijuana and a black .38 Rossi revolver loaded with one round.

Later that same morning Bowie police officers found a black man with blood on his face at the WalMart on Crain Highway who matched the description of the earlier traffic incident. The suspect, identified as Trevin Drew Coleman of the 1100 block of Patriot Lane, was taken to the Bowie Police Station.

During questioning, Coleman, 18, admitted to being the driver of the green LeSabre that crashed earlier that morning, and to being the owner of the backpack with the suspected marijuana and the gun.

Upon investigation, police discovered that the car and the property inside the car were taken during a burglary in University Park. Police also found that Coleman had an outstanding warrant through the Cheverly Police Department that had not yet been entered into the system.

Coleman was charged with a series of theft charges related to the University Park burglary, and also faces rogue and vagabond charges and malicious destruction of property charges related to the incident in Bowie.

Bowie police are seeking gun and drug charges against Coleman as well in connection with the items found in his backpack.

He is being held without bond in connection with the Cheverly police warrant.
