ReplyDancer ... it'd be a shame if they didn't let Lois and the owners of the eatery retrieve their stuff. Especially with the uniqueness of the stuff at Mary D's. But the main thing is no one was hurt.

That's a great point ... they were doing some extreme stuff to get that building vented, as the pictures show. Everyone from a public safety perspective was stellar on both sides of the river.

Yes, Mario, we definitely will. We're big fans of Ten Sandwiches and Mary D's as well. It was a nice throwback kind of ground-floor retail building and one of the things that makes downtown downtown. Very sad.

ReplyFor context, the board stated last night that they have between $2 million and $3 million (I didn't write down the exact number, but perhaps someone who was there can chime in) in the Rainy Day Fund above what they consider "untouchable," which is two months' operating expenses. I believe that's the magic number recommended to keep the bond rating healthy. So in effect, they pledged nearly half of what they consider to really be usable monies in that fund last night. If I'm understanding the workings of the fund correctly.

ReplyHow about a locally-owned healthy prepared-foods store/cafe in the mold of Mystic Market? Or Yellow House Pawcatuck (paging Bill Geary)?
If not, then maybe an Arby's. ;)

As a point of clarification, nobody would be excluded from playing. The assumption though, since the seasons are the same, that kids who played tackle wouldn't also play flag just because they would be already occupied in football activities. Also, according to the organizers, the program is meant to be supplemental to Stonington Youth Football in the sense that kids who wouldn't normally be allowed to or want to play full-pads football as youngsters could still gain skills/conditioning and then perhaps join tackle in high school. Both of the organizers present at the meeting Monday had children who have played tackle.
