ReplyIt is at times like this that we realize how important animals are to us, that they are a precious part of our family and that they should be protected. It is at times like this that we realize how much we should have a shelter in Bowie to keep our Bowie animals safe.

The question we should all consider is that ANY dog can bite. The issue should be to make the owner responsible for their dog no matter the breed. Another concern is how will you decide a dog is a "pit", "pit mix" or "other". There is no true way of determining the breed just by looks. Many "furry family members" have been taken away. Would you want to be the one to make that decision? Don't blame the breed, blame the owner.

ReplyMischief was adopted from the Animal Facility in Upper Marlboro about 4 1/2 years ago. He had a wonderful home with a fluffy bed to relax on but unfortunately things took a turn for the worst. His human companion developed a severe allergy his hair/dander and the doctor said she must get rid of the cat. Mischief is now back at the animal facility waiting for someone who will give him the love he deserves. We hope it's you. Please visit him or call the facility at 301-780-7201 and ask for Mischief.

While I can understand and respect someone's objection to the creation of a small short-term animal shelter, unfortunately the citizens have been given only part of the story. The 77 animals that the City reports is not the whole story and they do not mention the others that are taken down by citizens or Prince George's Animal Control. The 77 increases expenditionally and makes the need for a shelter viable. On another note, while the City will research the estimated costs for operating the shelter, a detailed breakdown of the estimated costs has already been submitted to them which total much less and that is not including the existing BAC budget. Many of the expenses are already being covered by the BAC budget and therefore would not be needed. The City would save more money by reducing the wear and tear of the BAC vehicles as well as the gasoline and time spent traveling through the City trying to locate owners and then the transport to County. There would also be a revenue stream for the City from reclaiming pets that now goes to the County. Most importantly, in a CIty that is the 5th largest in the state, it is now time for the Bowie pet companions who represent over 50% of the population to be given a helping hand. This is not a "nice to have" amenity. It is a "need to have". Ask any citizen who has felt the anguish of losing a pet and not knowing what to do, where to go and how to get there.
