Visions for Vacancies: Former Curves at Bowie Marketplace

What would you like to see in this former fitness center?

Once a Curves for Women gym, this now vacant space is Bowie Marketplace near the former Safeway is spacious to say the least.  I've heard that the whole property here is up for sale, so the question may be a moot point. However, pie in the sky, what would you like to see fill this space?  With a new LA Fitness going into Bowie Town Center this fall, another fitness facility does not seem necessary. Could this spot house a discount clothing store? A book store? A boutique?  Tell Patch in the comments, what would you like to see fill the storefront of this vacant fitness center in Bowie Marketplace?

Visions for Vacancies: Retro Building at Bowie Marketplace

Can you think of a good use for the retro structure at Bowie Marketplace?

Confession: This is one of my favorite buildings in all of Bowie.  I love everything about it—the irregular shape at the top, the stonework on the outside, the vintage sign, the drive-thru, the skylights, the teal colored roof.  The building seems to have been vacant for several years, but it looks to have been home one time to a bank, or may be a dry cleaners, if the sign is any indication.  If this building were revitalized, what would you like to see move in? A funky coffee shop? A bookstore? Maybe a hip, new business that digs the retro feel?  What is your vision for the vintage building in Bowie Marketplace? Tell Patch in the comments. Also, if you know more about the history of the structure and the previous tenants, I'd love to hear…

After a recent conversation with the present owners about leasing a space, I expect that you won't see a change anytime soon. They are in negotiations to sell the property...AGAIN!   more ›

Tia's Makes Way for Medical Office Building

The old building will be razed and new structure will be built in its place.

The long defunct restaurant once known as Tia's on Excalibur Road in Bowie won't be standing much longer if developers are able get their building permits approved by the county.  Called an eyesore by many residents, Tia's has long been vacant. Current owners Frederick Road Realty hope to build a two story medical office building on the property, a plan that was endorsed by the Bowie City Council in October. According to the plan submitted by developers the current building would be demolished and the new building would be built on the same footprint.  The Detailed Site Plan was approved by the Prince George's County Planning Board in November, and the developers are currently working to get their building permits approved by the county, …

Thanks Michael. I wasn't sure if it would be the owners or the contractors they hired to demo. Thanks for a starting point.   more ›

Visions for Vacancies: Old Navy

What new retailer would you like to see in this recently vacated space?

The recent relocation of Old Navy from the Bowie Town Center to Waugh Chapel has left another large, vacant store front in the mall, a property owned by Simon Malls. Simon has the property cited for use by a "big box" store. What would you like to see fill this void in Bowie Town Center? Another clothing retailer? An electronics store? A home goods our housewares store? Tell Patch in the comments! See also:

Looks like a LA Fitness is coming to the old Bed Bath and Beyond....At least it isn't another Gussini....Don't know if I will leave Sport Fit due to the new LA Fitness coming, b/c LA Fitness doesn't have a pool. I'd rather have Bed Bath and Beyond back, but I guess that isn't happening. Still wonder what is going into Off Broadway's old location (couldn't find that).   more ›

Visions for Vacancies: Collington Plaza

What new retailer would you like to see make a home in Collington Plaza?

With both Advance Auto Parts and Lima's Charbroiled Chicken opening there in the past six months, Collington Plaza has become a fairly happening place in Bowie.  Immediately adjacent to a Wal-Mart, Collington Plaza is already home to several national chains, including Giant, GNC, and NASA Federal Credit Union to name just a few. The shopping center also has a great location on Route 301, just south of Collington Road and Route 50.  Though the majority of the property in Collington Plaza is leased, there are still a few spaces open, including this 3,600 square foot corner retail space. Suggested uses include a carpet or flooring store, a furniture store, a restaurant, an electronics retailer, a clothing store or an education center.  Do any…

Interesting that I posted the comment above on February 17, 2013. Since that time, not one person has commented. That's about right...NO ONE CARES! That's exactly why businesses leave Bowie, or you make a choice not to open a business here in the first place! Da-daaaaa!   more ›

Visions for Vacancies: 6000 Laurel Bowie Rd.

What would you like to see in this former health club.

This week's edition of Visions for Vacancies: 6000 Laurel Bowie Rd.  This vacant 15,000 square foot building once housed a 24-Hour Fitness Club and now sits vacant near the intersection of Route 450 and Route 197.  The sizable space has a great location, close to two well traveled roads in Bowie. Parking would be shared with an adjacent office building.  A 72-month lease is being offered for $10 per square foot per year, putting the monthly rent at $12,500.  Permitted uses for this large space include gym, adult or child day care center, church, veterinary clinic, dry cleaners or laundromat, trade school, general office use and medical office use. Which of these options would you like to see move into 6000 Laurel Bowie Rd? Does Bowie need …

I wish I had the money right now I would move my daycare (www.hugachild.net) there. Plus add a drop in room. Another idea would be to have a family fun center.   more ›

Visions for Vacancies: Whatever Happened to The Muffin Man

The Muffin Man was set to open in Hilltop Plaza in 2011. What happened?

There was much excitement in Bowie when a 3,370-square-foot vacant store in Hilltop Plaza was leased out by Roderick O'Savio, owner of the popular Lanham Caribbean-style cafe, The Muffin Man. Orginally set to open in the spring of 2011, the opening was pushed back to November 2011, but it never happened.  Whatever happened to the muffin man, the muffin man, the muffin man? Well, according to Bruce Levine, director of commercial real estate for the owners of Hilltop Plaza, the plan for the new restaurant fizzled. "[O'Savio] personally built it out and realized it could not go forward for various reasons," Levine said. Now, the partially built-out space beside Bowie favorite Chesapeake Grille & Deli sits empty. What would you like to see in …

Visions for Vacancies: Tweeter

What would you like to see fill this 10,453 square foot space on Mitchellville road in Bowie?

Once the home of a Tweeter, an electronics chain that has been defunct since 2008, this 10,453 square foot space at 4501 Mitchellville Rd. in Bowie Gateway Center has be sitting vacant for quite sometime. It sits adjacent to a Sprint store and is nearby to several large anchor stores, including Kohls, Target and Home Depot. With its proximity to several major roadways in Bowie and its own dedicated parking lot, this empty building should be prime real estate. And, at just over 10,000 square feet, this spot is just the right size for a certain specialty grocery chain that Bowie residents have been yearning for years. What would you like to see fill the vacant Tweeter? A new restaurant? Another retail store? A certain elusive grocery chain? …

Visions for Vacancies: Restaurant in Hilltop Plaza

What new eatery would you like to see in Hilltop Plaza?

Would you like to see dining out options expand in Bowie? Well, this 6,600 square foot "turn key" restaurant building located in Hilltop Plaza in Bowie has been vacant for several months. A "turn key" restaurant is one was vacated by a previous tenant leaving much of the equipment in place, making start-up for a new tenant that much easier, and likely cheaper. This large, free-standing building with plenty of parking is just begging for a tenant. What restaurant would you like to see move into Hilltop Plaza? A new family friendly eatery, or perhaps a more upscale dining option? Tell us in the comments!
