Dear Bowie Residents, We, the undersigned, who serve to transform the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) as your non-partisan and concerned citizen leaders of the wide Prince George’s County community which includes the city of Bowie are all enthusiastically supporting Ms. Raheela Ahmed, for the upcoming non-partisan School Board Election in District 5 serving the Bowie area. As you know, our school system has many challenges facing it in the near term; the hiring of a new school superintendent, shrinking resources from our state government and recruitment/retention of the best and brightest teachers to instruct our children. Ms. Ahmed, who is a past student of PGCPS and currently a honor roll student at the University of …

There are many similarities between the candidates vying for the District 5 seat on the Prince George’s County Board of Education: they are both women, both members of minority groups, both long-term residents of the county and both highly qualified. Yet there is a key difference: Age. Raaheela Ahmad is the 19-year-old maverick, challenging the veteran incumbent, Verjeana Jacobs. Being young has its disadvantages. Why? Because some people start assuming. People assume that she may take unnecessary risks, or may have different values, or may not stand up to pressure. The young challenger, therefore, is painted as “inexperienced.” My experience, as a data driven professor, suggests otherwise. And that’s why I am supporting Raaheela’s dream. …

Current board chair Verjeana Jacobs and challenger Raaheela Ahmed answered a series of questions during a forum hosted in Bowie on Sept. 13.
A seasoned, experienced school board veteran or a 19-year-old college student with fresh ideas? That’s what things boiled down to in the Prince George’s County Public School (PGPS) Board of Education candidate forum on Sept. 13, and that’s what Bowie voters will have to decide in November. Current school board chair Verjeana Jacobs faced off against newcomer and top primary vote-getter Bowie resident Raaheela Ahmed in a forum hosted by the Greater Bowie Democratic Club. Both women answered some tough questions about the future of the school system and illuminated some of the differences between themselves as candidates. The candidates answered a variety of questions from both the club and audience members on topics ranging from their …

Bowie residents Raaheela Ahmed, 19, and David Murray, 20, are both being backed by a new group called SavePGCPS.
The Prince George’s County School Board could look decidedly younger this fall after November’s upcoming election. Bowie residents Raaheela Ahmed, 19, and David Murray, 20, are receiving support from the SavePGCPS campaign, according to a story in The Gazette. SavePGCPS was started by president of the Prince George’s County Young Democrats Larry Safford Jr. to bring changes to the school board this fall. “The people running things now don’t feel the fire at their feet the way we do,” Stafford told The Gazette. “The thing about the candidates we’re endorsing is that they care about where they just came from.” District 5 incumbent and current board Chairman Verjeana Jacobs, who is running for re-election, said in The Gazette the search for a…

Bowie resident Raaheela Ahmed, 18, will challenge incumbent Verjeana Jacobs in November.
With a passion for public service and 13 years of experience with the Prince George’s County Public School system, running for a seat on the Board of Education seems to be a natural fit for Bowie resident Raaheela Ahmed. Yet, Ahmed’s years of experience come not as being a teacher or a parent in the system, but as a former student. The 18-year-old UMd. student feels like her very recent and direct experience with the school system are what makes her an ideal candidate to represent District 5, where she garnered 35 percent of the vote in this month’s primary, earning her a place on the ballot this November. “I think my experience in the school system showed me that the decisions made [by the Board] have a direct effect,” said Ahmed. …

PG never misses an opportunity to underachieve. Raheela will make a difference. A degree is not everything, but it is something. You can't have a majority of people who set education policy who have no personal experience with educational success. There is a reason why PGCPS continues to produce mediocrity. New BOE members will be good for a change.   more ›
