Even though flu numbers may be dropping in Maryland, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that as of Jan. 5 (the most recent data available), 48 states, including Maryland and Virginia, continued to see "widespread" influenza activity, with California, Mississippi and Washington, DC, showing only "local" activity. Flu cases are on the rise, according to Flu Trends, a Google-run site that uses search data to estimate the prevalence of the disease around the world in real time. The latest figures indicate that flu activity in Maryland is in the high to intense range. At this time last year, the incidence of the virus was considered low to moderate in the state. The story is much the same for the Washington, D.C. area, where flu activity also registers in the high to intense range. In general, the Southeast is seeing the U.S.'s highest levels of flu activity, while the West is seeing lower infection rates. The number of West Nile virus cases reported is higher this year than ever before, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
This year, the United States has seen the largest outbreak of West Nile virus infections since the disease first appeared here in 1999, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). As of Aug. 21, the CDC had reported a total of 1,118 cases in people and 41 deaths resulting from the disease this year. Forty-seven states reported the virus in people, mosquitoes or birds. Patch has reported that the virus was detected in Montgomery County in a mosquito pool. Data from the Center for Disease Control shows that Maryland ranks 22nd highest in obesity in the country.
Using 2011 data, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently ranked Maryland as the 22nd most obese state in the nation. At 28.3 percent, Maryland’s obesity rate is up just over 1 percent from the previous year. In addition, 2009 data from the CDC showed that Prince George’s County had the third highest obesity rate among adults in the state with 33.8 percent, while Montgomery County had the lowest in the state with 18.1 percent. According to the 2009 study, Montgomery County was the only county with an obesity rate below 20 percent. In the 2011 state rankings, no state was below 20 percent.
