Blane Halliday and Luis Labra will serve as area managers for the Bowie Branch and South Bowie Branch Libraries.
Seen any new faces at the local library lately? Both of the Prince George’s County Libraries in Bowie have recently welcomed new area managers into the fold. Blane Halliday, who’s been working for public libraries for more than 15 years, will be managing the Bowie Branch Library. Halliday has wide range of public library experience, having working in large urban systems small town libraries and suburban library systems, according to a statement released by the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS). Halliday has worked as a branch manger before, and also has experience as a reference librarian. Book lovers in south Bowie have much to celebrate this fall with the opening of the South Bowie Branch Library, a two-story, state-of-the-art library facility and the city’s first new library in 43 years. South Bowie residents have been advocating for a library for more than a decade. The Bowie Library, located on Annapolis Road, was built in 1969 and can be an intimidating distance to travel for those who live in neighborhoods like Pointer Ridge and Collington Manor. A glimmer in the eye of Bowie residents since 1999, the South Bowie Library is hosting its grand opening celebration on Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. As Patch previously reported, the new facility, located at 15301 Hall Rd., will include and adult reading room, faux gas fire places, a snack room and vending machines, a computer lab, group study room and multiple workspaces and outlets for residents and their laptop computers. Patrons can now check out digital copies of books for up to three weeks with a PGCMLS account.
As we move into an increasingly paperless society, the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System is keeping pace, now offering patrons books on Kindle devices, to support the library’s “Virtual Branch” website. The announcement was made last week with the Prince George’s system being the first in the state offering Kindle titles. The introduction of Kindle books is part of the OverDrive WIN Initiative, a series of improvements planned to support the library system’s virtual branch.
