Think you’ve got singing chops? Bowie residents have two chances to flex their vocal chords and showcase their singing talents in upcoming auditions for both the city and the Bowie Baysox. The city of Bowie is holding open auditions for individuals or groups to perform the national anthem at various city events. They are also looking for individuals to act as stage announcers, or the Voice of Bowie, at various city events, including the Memorial Day Parade, Bowiefest, the Fourth of July and the International Festival. Auditions will be held on Feb. 23 at the Kenhill Center. The city of Bowie will host open auditions for individuals or groups to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" at local events. The Bowie Baysox are holding open auditions to sing the national anthem at one of their 71 home games this season.
Singing the national anthem in front of a crowd before a professional sporting event is an opportunity that doesn't come around every day, but the Baysox are giving area performers a chance with open auditions next month. Roughly between 50 and 100 people show up each year to try out, said Tom Sedlack, communications director for the Baysox, in an e-mail. "Last year we had 66 people audition on a cold, rainy day. The year before on a beautiful Saturday morning, 103 turned out," he said. There is a live performance of the national anthem before each of the team's home games—there are 71 in the 2011 season—and the Baysox encourage anybody to try out. Looking forward to auditioning. I auditioned a couple of years ago, it was cold, and my voice was just returning. I don't normally sing base, but I was definately singing it that day. It was fun!   more ›
