Mama Coca's Delights, Charis Center Partner for ArtsFest

The two old town Bowie institutions are partnering to host the event for a second year.

The Charis Center for the Arts and Mama Cocoa's Delights will be partnering for a second year to host old town Bowie's second ArtsFest, scheduled for April 13.  “Our inaugural year was extremely successful and we are excited to bring this event back again this year,” said Emma Hadley, executive director of the Charis Center, in a statement.  The rain-or-shine event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting in front of the Charis Center on 8th Street and following Chapel Avenue down to Mama Cocoa's Delights.  “We have theatre demonstrations and performances, a children’s chorus, several bands, and street Buskers to entrain the public while they peruse and shop for high quality art," Hadley said.  Hadley also said she is pleased to …

Bowie Candy Maker to Appear on Food Network

Tamarra Thomas, owner of Mama Cocoa’s Delights, will appear as a contestant on the Jan. 24 episode of Food Network’s reality show, Sweet Genius.

Bowie has been enjoying the sweet treats and sparkling personality of Mama Cocoa's Delights owner Tamarra Thomas for nearly two years, and later this month, Food Network fans will be exposed to her talent and her charms as a contestant on the reality TV show Sweet Genius.  Sweet Genius is a competition where four pastry chefs compete in three tests to be crowned winner and take home a $10,000 prize. The show is filmed in New York over a period of two days, and competitors are judged by renowned pastry chef Ron Ben Israel. “The whole thing was just amazing and mind-blowingly different,” Thomas said of the competition. Tamarra Thomas' Sweet Success

After being laid off in 2010, Tamarra Thomas decided to follow her dreams and open her own candy shop in Bowie.

When her restaurant employer started having financial troubles in early 2010, Bowie resident Tamarra Thomas said she wasn’t too surprised when she was laid off. “When a restaurant is having trouble financially, they cut managers or they cut pastry,” she said. As the restaurant's managing pastry chef, Thomas was among the first on the chopping block. Collecting unemployment and contemplating seeking another vulnerable restaurant pastry chef position, she decided it was time to take a chance. “I’d always had the dream of owning a candy shop, so I thought, ‘I’ve been laid off, I have the time, the time is now,’” said Thomas, and that’s how Mama Cocoa’s Delights was born.
