Dear Bowie Residents, We, the undersigned, who serve to transform the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) as your non-partisan and concerned citizen leaders of the wide Prince George’s County community which includes the city of Bowie are all enthusiastically supporting Ms. Raheela Ahmed, for the upcoming non-partisan School Board Election in District 5 serving the Bowie area. As you know, our school system has many challenges facing it in the near term; the hiring of a new school superintendent, shrinking resources from our state government and recruitment/retention of the best and brightest teachers to instruct our children. Ms. Ahmed, who is a past student of PGCPS and currently a honor roll student at the University of …
One Patch reader is concerned with how early voting affects PG schools.
A Patch reader and Prince George's County Schools teacher wrote Patch to let us know how she felt about Maryland State Senator James C. Rosapepe's pledge to open more early voting sites next year. The letter is addressed to Rosapepe. Dear Senator Rosapepe, I read with great dismay about your intent to offer MORE early voting next year. I am very curious to know if you are aware of the disastrous effects of early voting on the faculty, students and parents of Paint Branch Elementary School, which shares a parking lot with Paint Branch Community Center. If you aren't, please keep reading! On Thursday, the delivery truck that brings milk to the cafeteria could not complete the delivery because he couldn't get into the parking lot. My sons …

Dear Editor, Once again, Maryland has met the challenge of extreme weather, enduring Hurricane Sandy’s high winds and heavy rain and the resulting damage. On behalf of everyone at BGE, I want to thank our customers for preparing their families, homes and businesses for this storm and for their patience as we responded to power outages and repaired damage across eight Maryland counties and Baltimore City. Recovering from natural disasters is a community effort. We greatly appreciate the close coordination with emergency responders, state and local governments, and local media for helping to keep everyone safe and well-informed. With storms of this magnitude we also look outside of our own community for support. More than 1,900 utility…

Dr. Faheem Younus urges voters to support 19-year-old Raaheela Ahmed for the District 5 school board seat.

There are many similarities between the candidates vying for the District 5 seat on the Prince George’s County Board of Education: they are both women, both members of minority groups, both long-term residents of the county and both highly qualified. Yet there is a key difference: Age. Raaheela Ahmad is the 19-year-old maverick, challenging the veteran incumbent, Verjeana Jacobs. Being young has its disadvantages. Why? Because some people start assuming. People assume that she may take unnecessary risks, or may have different values, or may not stand up to pressure. The young challenger, therefore, is painted as “inexperienced.” My experience, as a data driven professor, suggests otherwise. And that’s why I am supporting Raaheela’s dream. …

Bowie Mayor Pro Tem Diane Polangin urges women to get out and vote in honor of the suffragettes who fought so hard to guarantee them this right.
This is the story of our grandmothers and their mothers who lived only 92 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.' They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed …

Bowie City Council Member Todd Turner (At-large) has lived in Bowie for more than 10 years and served on the City Council since 2005. He also serves as president of the Greater Bowie Democratic Club. The views expressed below are his own, and not those of the Bowie City Council or the Greater Bowie Democratic Club. On Nov. 6th, the residents of Maryland, Prince George’s and Bowie will have their say on Question 7, the ballot question seeking to expand gaming in Maryland and add a potential sixth site in the southern part of Prince George’s County. The General Assembly passed Senate Bill 1 in August during a Special Session that authorized the referendum question to be submitted to the voters of Maryland to consider this important matter…

Pit bull owner responds to a letter to the editor posted on Patch earlier this month by Kevin Dunne, the attorney who argued the "pit bull" case before Maryland's Court of Appeals.
Adopting a pit bull-type dog is a life-changing experience. First and foremost, one experiences the sheer joy and emotional fulfillment these types of dogs can bring into one's life. Far from the constant aggression and violence typically reflected in the snarling stock photos accompanying news headlines, the pit bull-type dog is, by nature, a jester. They respond to laughter like no other dog I have owned, and their relaxed, pleasant demeanor inspires that laughter like no other dog I've owned. They are athletic enough to accompany me on trail runs and hikes, but lazy enough at the end of the day to be a lap dog. Adopting a pit bull is a life-changing experience for a second reason: it starts with living every day in defiance of those …
