Hurricane Irene Aftermath: More than 450,000 Without Power in Maryland

Gov. Martin O’Malley says some residents may be in the dark for days.

More than 450,000 households in Maryland remained without power 35 hours after peak rain and winds from Hurricane Irene hit the state, and the Baltimore area could experience outages until Friday, officials said Monday. “We have not stopped working since the storm hit,” Gov. Martin O'Malley said from the Maryland Emergency Management Agency’s Reisterstown headquarters. But many remained in the dark. "There are some people who are going to be without electricity for a long period of time—several days,” he said. “We will try our best to give you better estimates so you can make accommodations.” Peak power outages hit Sunday, with 822,000 homes' electricity knocked out by winds of up to 65 mph and heavy rain. Wind gusts peaked at 85 mph. BGE…

Power Outages Continue in Bowie, Yard Waste Rules Relaxed

As of noon, roughly 5,000 BGE customers in Bowie were still without power.

In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, thousands in Bowie are still without power after the storm knocked out 40 percent of BGE's customers' service this weekend. At noon on Monday, BGE was reporting about 5,000 customers in Bowie were still without power, down 8,200 from Sunday. According to a statement from the city of Bowie released this afternoon, it may be several more days before all of Bowie's residents have power again. Rachael Lighty, a spokesperson for BGE, said that the vast majority of their customer's power would be restored by Friday; however, some extended outages may cause power outages for some customers until the weekend. “Hurricane Irene’s high wind and heavy rain caused widespread, horrific damage throughout our …

These Hurricanes Were So Bad, Their Names Were Retired

From the Patch archives: See how many of these you remember.

Ever wonder why you hear some hurricane names again? Or why some names disappear? Here's the scoop on hurricane names, straight from NOAA: For Atlantic hurricanes, there is actually one list for each of six years. In other words, one list is repeated every seventh year. The only time that there is a change is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for obvious reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it. There is an exception to the retirement rule, however. Before 1979, when the first permanent six…

Are You Covered for Storm Damage?

Maryland was spared the brunt of Irene, but some properties still had damage.

Now it's time for the cleanup. Maryland avoided a direct hit from Hurricane Irene, which means a lot of folks will be clearing tree limbs from yards and raking leaves. But some property owners may have suffered damage, whether it is to a home or vehicle. Whether your insurance will pay for repairs all depends on your coverage. Many homeowner policies even pay for tree removal from yards. But most do not cover the damages from flooding. The Maryland Insurance Administration strongly suggests that you take these steps to determine if you have coverage for hurricane damage and how to get payments. No agency is just going to write you a check. You will need to arm yourself with information and support your claim. 1.) Contact your insurance …

A Look Back at Washington's Past Storms

Washington Post names the Metro area's worst five hurricanes and tropical storms.

Even before touching the East Coast, Hurricane Irene brought about a state of emergency declaration from Gov. Martin O'Malley, along with his request that residents take the storm seriously. But will the storm rank among Washington's most notorious hurricanes and tropical storms? We won't know until after this weekend, but here's a look back at some of the most dangerous storms to hit the area. Kevin Ambrose, a writer for the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang, offers his list of the top five most dangerous hurricanes and tropical storms to have affected the Washington area. The list of five includes storms that occurred before the hurricane naming system, beginning with a storm from 1896 and ending with Hurricane Isabel in 2003. A …
