With the advent of the Internet, online shopping became popular, and with online shopping, sales became popular to lure customers. Over the past few years, Cyber Monday—an online shopping event meant to compete with Black Friday—has been gaining in popularity. Often, the deals are tech-related—computers, tablets, phones and mp3 players, but other types of goods are being offered. Sites like CyberMonday feature links to sites with some of the better deals out there.

Not paying sales tax for online orders? We won't tell.
Capital News Service As Marylanders join millions of others nationwide in the computer shopping blitz that's become known as Cyber Monday, they should think about this: If they paid the sales tax they owe to the state for such purchases, Maryland would be $200 million richer. The problem is, virtually no one pays, and the state's top tax enforcement officer doesn't believe they should. Online buyers are supposed to pay sales taxes for their purchases by Jan. 21, 2013, one of the four deadlines a year for Maryland residents to file their "use tax." This use tax is imposed on any purchase that is not taxed by the seller, whether it be out of a catalog, from an Internet retailer or even from a store in Delaware, which does not impose sales …

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Holiday Weekend Sales, Pre-Christmas Sales, Post-Hanukah Clearance Sales, and Kwanzaa Clearance Events—it’s enough to make you go crazy as a consumer. One organization, AdBusters, has a solution to help you retain your sanity—“Buy Nothing Day.” The group’s website touts that “the journey towards a sane sustainable future begins with a single step” and sees capping your consumption for an entire day as that step. AdBusters, which also publishes a monthly anti-consumerist magazine, is also a proponent of the Occupy movement, and offers online and printable ads to help spread the word. Cyber Monday rolls in right behind a door-buster sale-busting Black Friday.
The forecast for Cyber Monday appears sunny if Black Friday is any indicator. comScore reported $816 million in online sales on Black Friday, a whopping 26-percent increase from Black Friday 2010 — and pushing it to the top of the charts for online spending days this year.
