Prince George's County students taking advantage of value at consistent levels.
The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) was recently named as the 5th "Best Value in Public Colleges" by Kiplinger, trailing only the College of William and Mary, the University of Florida, the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Maryland was ranked 5th for in-state students and 10th for out-of-state. The annual Kiplinger study bases its ranking on a combination of financial factors, including total cost-per-year and cost after need-based aid for in-state students, total cost-per-year and cost after need-based aid for out-of-state students and average debt at graduation. The hangout will take place on Feb. 6.
University of Maryland football coach Randy Edsall will host a Google Hangout on national signing day, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m., according to a WBOC story. The chat will be moderated by UMD quarterback C.J. Brown. Fans can submit questions to Edsall in advance or during the chat. Questions can be sent via Twitter by using #MarylandFootball, Facebook (Maryland Football and Maryland Terrapins) and email (MarylandFootball@umd.edu). To be a part of the hangout, fans must log into their Google+ account and visiting the Randy Edsell Google+ page. The chat will be posted later on the Maryland football YouTube channel as well.

The charity aims to raise $30,000
A local charity will be throwing an inaugural ball to raise funds for the creation of a teen homeless shelter, according to The Gazette. “Honoring Our President Elect,” based in College Park, aims to raise $30,000 with a charity ball at the Howard Theatre at 1 p.m. on Jan. 20, with tickets set at $100 per person. Proceeds go to Sasha Bruce Youthwork, an organization that hopes to expands the beds available to homeless teens. The ball will feature guests such as County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) and Jermaine Crawford, who acted in The Wire.

Detectives are investigating the death as a suicide.
Prince George's County Police said they found the body of a missing University of Maryland student Friday night. David Johnathan Scherr, 20, a Pikesville native, was unresponsive in a 2013 Ford Escape parked in a lot near Route 197 and Route 450, according to Prince George's County Police. Detectives are investigating the death as a suicide. Scherr had been missing since Dec. 19.

Maryland will become part of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation.
Joining the Big Ten Conference was not only an athletic decision, but also an academic one, according to University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh. By becoming part of the Big Ten, the university will be part of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of universities that share academic resources and research. The financial gains from joining the Big Ten will be used to earmark substantial funds for students in need, not just student athletes, according to Loh. This marks a new financial paradigm for intercollegiate athletics where the athletics help support university, Loh said. "That's paramount in these tight times," he said. One shelter remains open in Prince George's County.
The county shelters opened during Hurricane Sandy at Charles H. Flowers and Gwynn Park high schools are closed, Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management announced Tuesday night. The College Park shelter will remained open Wednesday until further notice, it added. The open shelter is state operated and located at University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum at 7950 Baltimore Ave. It is pet-friendly and allows evacuees to shelter along with their pets, but does not allow animals to be dropped off without their owners, according to Carol Terry, a spokesperson for the county Department of Environmental Resources. College students called upon to support bill which would grant in-state tuition to children of undocumented immigrants.
Francisco Catagena does not have too many memories about his native El Salvador. It's understandable. He came to America at the age of 10 with his father, mother and two younger siblings. Cartagena's father and mother were both college-educated government employees in El Salvador. His father was a ranking official in the state prison system. But Cartagena said that some reforms his father was trying to implement in the gang-ridden prison system were not too popular with some. As a result, his family began to receive death threats. Cuts expected to bolster shuttle services to Shady Grove.
It’s the end of the line for the University of Maryland’s shuttle services to Laurel, Bowie and Burtonsville. This week the College Park campus’ Department of Transportation Services announced that routes to the three locations would end Oct. 12 after 10 years in operation, reports college’s student paper, The Diamondback. Ending the routes is expected to save more than $60,000 that will be reallocated to improving efficiency along the Shady Grove route, according to the school’s DOT. School officials said the cancelled routes suffer from low ridership in comparison to the Shady Grove Route. The Prince George's County Council is set to hold a Nov. 1 public hearing on redistricting followed by a vote.
A plan to redraw the political districts in Prince George's County cleared a major hurdle earlier this week when the Prince George's County Council set a Nov. 1 public hearing for the plan, to be followed by a final vote. According to federal law, redrawing district lines occurs every 10 years in accordance with U.S. Census data. The nine districts in Prince George’s County must be equal in population and not change more or less than 5 percent in population, according to law. County planners have been holding hearings for months for input on how to redraw district lines. A final draft emerged for introduction on Tuesday.
