The charity aims to raise $30,000
A local charity will be throwing an inaugural ball to raise funds for the creation of a teen homeless shelter, according to The Gazette. “Honoring Our President Elect,” based in College Park, aims to raise $30,000 with a charity ball at the Howard Theatre at 1 p.m. on Jan. 20, with tickets set at $100 per person. Proceeds go to Sasha Bruce Youthwork, an organization that hopes to expands the beds available to homeless teens. The ball will feature guests such as County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) and Jermaine Crawford, who acted in The Wire.

The Prince George's County police and fire departments delivered the baskets to seniors in Hyattsville and Greenbelt Thursday.
Christmas came early for some Prince George's County senior citizens Thursday, when county police officers and firefighters delivered baskets of food to their doors. Prince George's County public safety professionals delivered the food to seniors in Hyattsville and Greenbelt after collecting donations since Nov. 19. The deliveries are a part of the Prince George’s County Public Safety Assistance Program, which hopes to provide Christmas dinners to families in need this holiday season, a police press release stated. Seniors living in Frienship Arms (580542nd Avenue in Hyattsville) and Green Ridge House (22 Ridge Road in Greenbelt) received the donations today. Hyattsville, Laurel, UMd, Greenbelt, Bowie and a host of local law enforcement officers pitch in to make sure underprivileged children aren't forgotten on Christmas.
Even grown police officers can cry as evidenced by a local Christmas shopping program for underprivileged kids. Capt. Carl DeWalt with the Laurel Police Department couldn't keep the tears from falling when he shared his story about a boy who wanted to buy boots at Christmas, according to Hyattsville Police Sgt. Michael Rudinski, who started the program Operation Santa With a Badge. It was the captain's first time in the program, and he picked a boy from Laurel Elementary to go shopping with, DeWalt recounted. Brides Against Breast Cancer, a national nonprofit group that sells donated wedding dresses to benefit people impacted by cancer will make a stop in the area from September 28-30 at the Dupont Circle Hotel in Northwest Washington, DC. The Ripken Gourmet Burger will be available this summer.
Baseball and burger fans alike will be delighted by Cal Ripken's latest business and charity venture. Bowie, get ready for the Ripken Gourmet Burger. In a partnership with Roseda Beef and Giant Food, Ripken Baseball announced Tuesday the Ripken Gourmet Burger, which will be available in 30 Giant Food stores in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia beginning this summer. PGPD said more than 30,000 tots will be given out this weekend.
The county police department's community services division and members of the United States Marine Corps Reserves will host the “Toys for Tots” program this weekend in Prince George’s County. The “Toys for Tots” program collects new, unwrapped toys and gives them out as Christmas gifts to children in need during the holiday season. More than 30,000 toys will be distributed this weekend, a PGPD press release stated. The collection will be held at county police headquarters on Barlowe Road. Hours are: Barry L. Stanton, deputy chief administrative officer for public safety and Chief of Police Mark A. Magaw will be on hand Saturday morning to help distribute toys to participating families.
