Fear of Gun Control Drives Gun Sales Sky High in Maryland

By Rashee Raj Kumar, Capital News Service

Fears of new gun control regulations proposed by President Barack Obama and Gov. Martin O’Malley have intensified sales at Maryland gun shops. While the boost in sales has bolstered gun dealer’s profits, it has also led to a shortage in the supply of guns in the state, especially assault rifles, gun shop owners said. "Everybody is panicking. Every day has been absolutely crazy for the last three weeks," Henry Calvert, president of Calvert Firearms, Inc. in North East, a town in Cecil County, said of his customers. “It’s a bear market. Everyone is purchasing everything that comes in." Obama proposed a set of gun control regulations on Wednesday, which included a universal background check for all gun sales and a ban on military-style …

That is the truth!!! All crime continued to drop after the assault weapons ban was lifted in 2008 (I think i have that year right). The problem is a high capacity magazine, a bullet or an assault weapon never hurt anything or anyone with out a person intent on doing harm behind it, That is the root of this problem that needs fixing, not limitation of rights on law abiding citizens.   more ›

SPEAK OUT: What's Your Favorite Girl Scout Cookie?

It's time to place your 2013 cookie order!

Since 1917, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America have been selling baked goods to raise funds to support local community service projects, maintain Girl Scout camps, develop programs and provide financial support to girls in need. Last year, in the Washington, DC, area alone, more than 4.5 million boxes of cookies were sold. While scouts still sell cookies door-to-door, the Girl Scouts have gone high-tech in the last few years, offering the "Cookie Club" website—which allows scouts to sell cookies via email—and launching the Girl Scout Cookie Locator app so that one is never more than a few clicks away from one's favorite cookies: So, we want to know, what is your favorite Girl Scout Cookie, and why?

Report: Sales of Bullet Proof Backpacks Up

Sales jumped following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Following the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, sales of bullet proof backpacks are soaring, according to a story in The Washington Post. Bullet Blocker, a company that sells bullet proof tactical gear, saw sales jump from 15 to 20 backpacks a week to 50 to 100 per day, according to the report. Patch contacted several manufacturers, but none returned comment before publication. The Washington Post wrote: In Arizona, a body-armor manufacturer called Amendment II says sales of its bulletproof childrens’ backpacks -- Avengers for boys, Disney Princesses for girls -- have jumped more than 500 percent. Black Dragon Tactical, a survivalist company in New Hampshire, is promoting armored backpack-inserts on its Facebook page.

Developers, Officials Break Ground for Tanger Outlets at National Harbor

Judge's decision lifts stay on construction, groundbreaking moves ahead on Tanger Outlets.

An outlet mall will still open in Prince George's County, even after local residents voiced opposition. A groundbreaking ceremony Thursday marked the official start of construction for the Tanger Outlets at National Harbor, according to a tweet by Fire Chief Marc Bashoor with the Prince George's County Fire Department.  A Prince George's County Circuit Court judge ruled Tuesday against Fort Washington and Oxon Hill residents who wanted to prevent construction on the 340,000-sq. foot project, according to NBC.  The outlet mall is expected to bring 85 stores to Oxon Hill, which could possibly also house the county's first casino in Nation Harbor. The judge said halting the project would have a negative economic impact on the county, but the …

Dear One Percent BIKER, We must have been looking at different sets of plans. The ones I looked at at the groundbreaking did not appear to offer leases to rehab centers and and state services. In fact the lease rates are far in excess of what the state is willing to pay per square foot. It puts community outreach programs in older, less expensive locations,.   more ›

Prince George's Housing Market Rebounding

Prince George's County was one of the hardest hit markets.

Prince George's County housing prices had the best year-over-year increase in the Washington metro region, accoring to a Washington Business Journal story. Prince George's County still has the lowest housing sales prices in the region, but the median sales price was up 20 percent from last year at this time to $180,000.

Prince George's is always the last part of the Washington Metro area to see serious recovery. It was the same in the "bubble years". The surrounding Counties and Northern Virginia enjoyed the skyrocketing housing prices before Prince George's. Of course, Prince George's has been the hardest hit with short sales and foreclosures which will depress home prices until they get flushed through the …   more ›

Prince George's Ups Incentives for Women-Owned Businesses

"Women-owned businesses are some of the fastest growing, most innovative and creative companies in this region," Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker says.

Prince George's County is hoping to attract more women-owned businesses. The county has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Women President's Education Organization (WPEO-DC), giving certified women business enterprises more opportunity to do business with the county. The county currently accepts certifications from the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), and this MOU makes woman-owned companies that are WBENC-certified also qualified for county Minority Business Enterprise certification. "Women-owned businesses are some of the fastest growing, most innovative and creative companies in this region," Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker said. "I believe this MOU will encourage more women-…

Hanover casino contributed $13 million to the state's education trust fund.

Judging by the revenue that flooded Maryland Live! in its first month in operation, a lot of Marylanders in the Washington, DC, area spent the record heat wave over the weekend in an air-conditioned casino. The casino at Arundel Mills in Hanover has generated more than $28 million in revenue since its opening, with each slot machine collecting more than $359 a day in June. The casino generated about 70 percent of all the slots-related revenue in Maryland and pumped $13 million into state’s education trust fund, according to figures from the Maryland Lottery. O'Malley Announces 60-Day Review of Business Regulations

Focus turns to job creation plan that is likely to couple tax increases with growth in capital budget spending.

State agencies will begin a 60-day review of business regulations with an eye toward creating and retaining jobs in the state, Gov. Martin O'Malley said Monday. O'Malley announced his executive order just prior to the opening of a special session in which legislators will take up the issue of redrawing the state's eight congressional districts. The legislature will not take up a jobs bill or other related efforts between now and Wednesday when the the House and Senate are expected to recess. "The intent is to bring a package of things to the General Assembly" in January, O'Malley said. Part of that package is likely to include increased spending on capital budget items with a focus on transportation and school construction projects. "We …

I have to agree as well. I think Maryland and especially Prince Georges county is ill served with out the checks and balances that arrise with a functioning two party system. You know there are serious problems when Leslie Johnson an elected official who after being convicted of a felony is allowed to hold her seat. The question is, is the Republican Party as it stands know going to have any …   more ›
