Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Bowie

Tell us what this holiday means to you and how you will celebrate?

Monday, Jan. 21 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to give back and serve the community, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. In Bowie, Church of the Redeemer is holding services in King's honor, while the Overdue Recognition Art Gallery is also holding an Inauguration Watch Party with a $10 admission.  The city of Bowie will also honor King's work with an event Saturday that will feature the artwork of local students that were selected as finalists in the city's …

Where Can I Get a Flu Shot in Bowie?

Flu season hits early and hard in the United States, says CDC.

According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) FluView flu activity tracker, the influenza virus has “increased substantially” in the south central and Southeast regions of the country, and has come the earliest since the 2003-2004: While influenza vaccines have been around since 1945, the type that contains a live virus have only been used since 2003, and many people still wonder if they should get a flu vaccine shot. Today, there are two basic types of flu vaccines – traditional needle injection and a nasal spray. Who should get a flu shot? The CDC believes that all persons aged 6 months and older should be vaccinated on a yearly basis, but especially urges the shot for children under 5 and …

10 Years Ago: DC Sniper Shootings

What do you remember about the days when John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were on the loose?

Today, Oct. 2, is the 10-year anniversary of what became known as the DC sniper case—a horrific chapter in local history that began in Montgomery County and riveted the nation. Only one of the attacks was in Prince George's County— outside of Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie. A 13-year-old Iran Brown was shot around 8:09 a.m. as he arrived to school. Brown survived the attack and later testified at the trials. It's hard to describe to those who weren't here what it was like to fear a random bullet during routine trips to the grocery store or gas station, or to drive past playgrounds and parks empty of children, runners and bike riders. The cold calculation of the crime was unthinkable at the time. The perpetrators, John Allen …

I remember it like it was yesterday. My oldest daughter was 13 and a student at Benjamin Tasker where Iran Brown was shot. I remember being scared as my brother told me it was a 13-year-old girl who was shot. So I was scared for my daughter. My youngest daughter was at Samuel Ogle Elementary School at the time. I remember walking very closely to her to protect her when I picked her up from school.   more ›

University of Maryland To Cut Shuttle Service to Laurel, Bowie, Burtonsville

Cuts expected to bolster shuttle services to Shady Grove.

It’s the end of the line for the University of Maryland’s shuttle services to Laurel, Bowie and Burtonsville. This week the College Park campus’ Department of Transportation Services announced that routes to the three locations would end Oct. 12 after 10 years in operation, reports college’s student paper, The Diamondback. Ending the routes is expected to save more than $60,000 that will be reallocated to improving efficiency along the Shady Grove route, according to the school’s DOT.  School officials said the cancelled routes suffer from low ridership in comparison to the Shady Grove Route. The Laurel, Bowie, and Burtonsville route was mainly used by staff and the Shady Grove route was mainly used by students, according to The …
