Former Bowie Residents Sentenced for Harboring Immigrant

The couple pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count each of harboring a woman illegally in their home for 10 years.

A Prince George's County couple will be spending some time in prison for harboring an illegal immigrant, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.  Gloria Edwards, 61, will serve a 12-month sentence, while her 75-year-old husband Alfred—a retired physician—will serve three months, according to the DOJ. The Edwards' formerly lived in Bowie. The couple will both be on supervised release after serving their sentence and were ordered today by Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow to pay the victim restitution of $369,580.  “Alfred and Gloria Edwards compelled the victim to work for them for a decade for little or no salary,”  said U.S. Attorney Rod J. UPDATE: Car Fire on Route 50 Quickly Extinguished

Firefighters are responding to the scene of a car fire, according to a spokesman.

Update, May 2, 10:00 a.m. No injuries were reported as a result of the Wednesday car fire on Route 50, according to PGFD spokesperson Mark Brady.  The fire was small likely mechanical in nature, Brady said. It was quickly extinguished. Orignal story Commuters using Route 50 through Bowie should be prepared for delays. Firefighters are responding to the scene of a car fire in the median near the Freeway Airport, according to Prince George's Fire/EMS Department spokesman Mark Brady. No other details are available at this time, but Brady tweets that residents should avoid the area.

Felony Theft Suspect Arrested in Bowie

The Prince George's Sheriff's Office arrested a Bowie man on a warrant for a felony theft scheme.

A felony theft suspect from Bowie was arrested by Prince George's deputies on April 19. According to court records, police issued a warrant for Charles Stephen Dawson, of Prince Wales Court, on charges related to a felony theft scheme on April 3. Dawson, 48, was indicted by a county grand jury on charges of a theft scheme, conspiracy to commit theft scheme and forgery of private documents, the sheriff's office reported. According to officials, the crimes were committed over a four-month period between Dec. 30, 2011 and April 20, 2012. Deputies found Dawson in Bowie on April 19 and took him into custody, the sheriff's office reported. He was transported to the county's department of corrections and charged.  

Police: Teen Arrested in Fatal Stabbing of Bowie Man

Asheville Police arrested a 16-year-old boy in the fatal stabbing of a Bowie man in North Carolina over the weekend.

A Bowie man was fatally stabbed over the weekend in North Carolina and local authorities have arrested a 16-year-old boy, Asheville police reported.  Travis Schoon, 35, of Bowie, was stabbed in the chest around 2:50 a.m. Sunday on North Market Street in Asheville, NC, police reported. According to police, the stabbing occurred outside of a restaurant after an altercation. Although Schoon was transported to a local hospital, he died a short time later, according to police.  Danras Damoy Bunsie, 16, surrendered to police overnight, police reported. Bunsie is charged with second-degree murder and assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill. His bond is set at $750,000. According to Black Mountain News, Bunsie was place on a long-term …

Bowie Woman to Receive Christmas in April Improvements

More than 80 Prince George's County homes will be improved this Saturday.

An 85-year-old Bowie woman will receive a number of improvements to the home she shares with her daughter as a part of Prince George's County's Christmas in April event, according to a county spokesman.  Jessie Thomas, of Chesnut Avenue, needs repairs to her leaky roof, cabinets, drywall as well as some yard work and a gutter cleaning. They don't even have a working refridgerator. Thomas has lived in her home for 36 years, but now suffers from Parkinson's. Their home is slowly deteriorating but she'd like to remain there. Thomas' adult daughter has congestive heart failure and diabetes and neither can make or afford to pay for the repairs themselves. Bruce Thomas, of St. Matthew's UMC in Bowie, is adopting the home and leading the charge …

UPDATE: Bowie House Fire Causes $15K in Damages

The fire broke out in the kitchen area, a fire spokesman said.

Prince George's County firefighters responded to the scene of a kitchen fire Wednesday afternoon in the 2900 block of Stonybrook Drive in Bowie. According to PGFD spokesman Mark Brady, the fire broke out in the kitchen on the stove and extended to the laundry room. No injuries were reported. PGFD estimates fire damages at $15,000.
