Bowie Becomes Eighth Certified Sustainable Community in Maryland

City’s Green Team aims to better both the community and environment through sustainability.

The City of Bowie has become a bit greener, thanks to the hard work of residents and city employees. In March of this year, Bowie became the eighth city in the state become Sustainable Maryland Certified by, due in large part to the hard work and dedication of the Green Team, a group of residents dedicated to making Bowie cleaner and greener.  According to the Sustainable Maryland website:  Sustainable Maryland Certified (SMC) is a new initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland (EFC) designed to support Maryland's 157 municipalities as they look for cost-effective and strategic ways to protect their natural assets and revitalize their communities. Have a Green Holiday

Bowie's Green Team offers some tips on keeping the holiday season environmentally friendly.

Submitted by Rhea Pechter The holiday season is well known for inspiring conspicuous energy consumption in the forms of extended car travel, spirited light displays, and stockings full of imported toys. However, there are still ways to reduce our carbon footprints. If you have a green thumb, consider buying a live Christmas tree with the roots intact. A live tree can be replanted and bring beauty to your yard for years to come. If you opt for a cut tree, set it out, undecorated, after the holiday on your yard waste pick up day. Paper goods, such as wrapping paper and cards can be set out for regular curbside recycling pick up. Bowie's amazing single stream recycling service allows us to put everything into the same bin. Bowie Green Team Launches Survey

The city sponsored group is looking for resident feedback on some of its upcoming initiatives.

What do Bowie residents think about composting and eating locally grown food? That’s what the Bowie Green Team wants to know. The Bowie Green Team, an all-volunteer committee made up of city residents working to make Bowie sustainable, has launched a survey seeking resident feedback. Specifically, the Green Team subcommittee on community based food and wellness wants to know what residents think of some of its goals. "We are pursuing projects in Bowie that will develop community based food, such as establishing multiple community gardens,” said Green Team member Rhea Pechter, who added these gardens also foster a sense of cohesion and allows gardeners to share ideas. “They are also a great way to promote people eating local foods,” she …
