'Cymbeline' Opens in Bowie Oct.18

The Annapolis Shakespeare Company's upcoming production promises something for everyone.

Romance, comedy, tragedy, death, happy endings, resolutions, lessons learned and lessons not learned. The Annapolis Shakespeare Company’s upcoming production of Cymbeline, which opens Oct. 18 at the Bowie Playhouse, has something for everyone. “Tackling this work is very exciting because there are a lot of layers to discover in the process,” said Sally Boyette-D’Angelo, artistic director for the company. Boyette-D’Angelo isn’t kidding when she says that there’s a lot going on in the play, which is one of Shakespeare’s older and longer works. There’s forbidden love, an exiled husband, an evil queen, long-lost brothers, an assassination plot and manipulation in Cymbeline, all in a story that has several correlations with Snow White, said …

The Annapolis Shakespeare Company will hold its final performances of The Comedy of Errors this weekend, with shows at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Bowie Playhouse. There also will be a 2 p.m. show on Saturday. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors.

Annapolis Shakespeare Company Holds Auditions for Cymbeline

Auditions will be held Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment only.

Calling all thespians! Auditions begin today for the Annapolis Shakespeare Company’s next production, Cymbeline, at the Bowie Playhouse. All experienced actors are welcome and should prepare two contrasting monologues from any of Shakespeare’s works to audition for a principal role, and one monologue in verse to audition for a ensemble role. Advanced student actors ages 13-18 also are invited to audition, though there will be a workshop fee of $300 if cast in a role. Last Chance: Local Theater Productions

Bowie residents might want to catch these local performances before they close this weekend.

This weekend is the last chance for local theater lovers to catch two Bowie-based productions. The Annapolis Shakespeare Company will hold its final performances of The Comedy of Errors this weekend, with shows at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Bowie Playhouse. There also will be a 2 p.m. show on Saturday. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. The Prince George’s Summer Teen Theatre also will hold their final performances of 30 Reasons Not to Be in a Play at the Charis Center for the Arts this week, with shows at 7p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and show at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10, and $8 for seniors and kids 12 and under.

Shakespeare With a Steampunk Twist

The Annapolis Shakespeare Company's upcoming production opens on Aug. 2 at the Bowie Playhouse.

What do time travel, steampunk, classical text, and 1890s France have in common? They are all essential components of the Annapolis Shakespeare Company’s (ASC) upcoming production of The Comedy of Errors, according to Artistic Director Sally Boyett-D’Angelo. Shakespeare’s original work tells the tale of two sets of identical twins accidentally separated at birth. When the four encounter one another years later, cases of mistaken identity lead to near-seductions, beatings, false arrests and accusations, and more. The story and the language in the ASC production will stay true to the orginal, but there are some surprising twists for theater goers. “We’ve modernized it without changing the integrity of the story,” said Boyett-D’Angelo.
