POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

If you compare it to the cost of good equipment in any other sport, youve got the sane problem. Hockey equipment can cost upwards of $500. Lacrosse sticks are just as expensive. Football gear, basketball shoes, etc. You name it. The nice thing about a baseball glove and bat is generally a good glove, when taken care of, can last 10+ years or more. Im still using my Rawlings pro preferred that I …   more ›

In Bowie, Increased Budget Could Cost Residents

If the FY 2013 budget increase is approved, user fees could go up for adult athletics and ice skating groups.

Bowie residents could be facing higher user fees for athletics fields and other city-run facilities if the the increase in the operating budget for FY 2013 is approved by the city council, reported the Gazette. The proposed budget increase was unveiled during Monday's worksession by City Manager David Deutsch.  The Gazette reported that adult softball and kickball teams, group ice skating packages, and group rates at the city Ice Arena could all be subject to high fees, while other facilities, like the Allen Pond Pond park would restructure fees, but not increase them. Bowie City Finance Director Rob Patrick was unaware of how much revenue the proposed increase would generate, he told the Gazette on Tuesday. Bowie residents will have a …

No one "likes" increased fees, but did you look at the cost of providing the services? All taxpayers in Bowie are subsidizing these recreational facilities because these fees don't cover the costs.   more ›

Local Student Keith Shivers Dominates in Capital Classic

Shivers scored a team high 17 points in the Capital Classic preliminary game on April 21.

Henry A. Wise High School senior Keith Shivers lead the Suburban All-Stars in a 109-101 victory over the District All-Stars in Saturday’s preliminary game of the 39th Annual Capital Classic basketball tourney, reported the Gazette. “In my opinion, he was the MVP tonight,” said Wise’s Suburban All-Stars coach Rob Garner. Shivers, who has already garnered the interest of basketball programs at Morgan State, Howard, Hampton, Delaware, Mount St. Mary’s and Loyola, is hoping his play during the classic will draw even more college recruits to his doorstep, reported the Gazette. “That’s what my intentions were, to promote myself and get schools to say, ‘Hey, I want that kid,’” said Shivers. Baysox Suffer Second Loss in a Row

Despite late rally, the Baysox fell to Erie 4-3.

After a slow start during Saturday's rainy game, two Baysox home runs in the eighth inning were not enough to bring the team to victory against Erie. Erie scored three runs in a big second inning, and the Baysox were not able to pull ahead. Manager Gary Kendall said the team was not getting enough hits early in the game, but he did see some strong playing in later innings and is feeling positive about the future. “We showed some life at the end of the game,” said Kendall in a statement. “You hate to lose a ballgame, but I liked that we showed some character; we just let an inning get away from us early in the ballgame.” Second baseman Jonathan Schoop hit double to right field in the third inning. Center fielder L.J. Hoes singled to center …
