Maryland Ranks 11th Most Bike-Friendly State

The state's spending and advocacy for cyclists earned it a high ranking from the League of American Bicyclists.

Maryland is one of the best states in the region to bike, according to new rankings from the League of American Bicyclists. A combination of citizen advocacy for safe bike routes, dedicated state funding and a "Share the Road" campaign helped the state earn No. 11, behind places like Washington state, Colorado, Oregon and Massachusetts. Neighboring states also fared well on the rankings list: Delaware was 5, Pennsylvania was 15 and Virgina was 16. The League created a list of 10 signs that show progress on bikeability for states, including more than 1 percent of the commuters using bikes, bike education for police and congestion mitigation, none of which the organization noted positively for Maryland. 4 Day Trips You Can Plan for Memorial Day

Didn't plan a whole weekend away? Here are a few places where you can go to for just the day.

Not everyone plans a getaway for Memorial Day weekend. But if you don't want to be stuck in the house with the kids for three days, a solidly-planned day trip with the family may do you some good. To avoid traffic, don't travel Friday evening through Saturday morning and Sunday evening through Monday. Which leaves Saturday and Sunday as days to take one of these day trips. Being a native Delawarean, I will tell you that Delaware Beaches are the best. (It's OK, I listed my biases in my profile.) But, seriously, the drive isn't too bad from our region and there are a lot of options once you get there—from the games and rides on the Rehoboth boardwalk and outlet shopping, to the bars in Dewey, to the award-winning seafood and even just a good…

What would you like to see in this former fitness center?

Once a Curves for Women gym, this now vacant space is Bowie Marketplace near the former Safeway is spacious to say the least.  I've heard that the whole property here is up for sale, so the question may be a moot point. However, pie in the sky, what would you like to see fill this space?  With a new LA Fitness going into Bowie Town Center this fall, another fitness facility does not seem necessary. Could this spot house a discount clothing store? A book store? A boutique?  Tell Patch in the comments, what would you like to see fill the storefront of this vacant fitness center in Bowie Marketplace?

With the support and guidance through this conference, we can empower the community’s leaders to work towards sustainable development of their communities,” William said.
