Gateway Open Studio Tour: Full Schedule of Events

The Day’s Activities

The Gateway Open Studio Tour will kick off at 11:30 a.m. with the unveiling of a new public art sculpture by artist and Red Dirt Studio founder Margaret Boozer, located in the courtyard of the Gateway Arts Center. Gateway CDC provides a bus to take the general public to various location on the day of the event. The bus will leave the Gateway Arts Center at noon and make stops at various locations and then loop around the Gateway Arts District.

At 5 p.m., immediately following the tour, the Gateway Arts Center will host an after-party and opening receptions for two exhibitions. The 39th Street Gallery will be opening an exhibition curated by Gateway Arts District artist Martha Jackson Jarvis, and the Brentwood Arts Exchange will be opening their elimination-style group show entitled Project America’s Next Top Master Artist.

Project America’s Next Top Master Artist Participating Artists: Eloy Areu, Frank E. Ballato III, Melissa Burley, Ellen Cornett, Pamela S. The Brentwood Arts Exchange is bringing "reality" to the gallery. Project America's Next Top Master Artist is an elimination-style exhibition presented in three rounds modeled on shows like American Idol, Project Runway, and Dancing with the Stars. Artists working in all media who live within 150 miles of Brentwood applied to participate in hopes of winning a solo exhibition and a $500 cash prize. The judges have selected the group of artists who will kick of Round 1 and compete for the title of America's Top Master Artist.

The May 10 opening reception caps off events for the Spring 2014 Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tour. That night and during the exhibition periods, visitors to the gallery will vote to determine which artists will stay and which will go home, eliminating half of the artists between each round. Artists who remain will bring new artworks to display and face audience voting once again.

Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center
4519 Rhode Island Avenue, North Brentwood

Sharing Our Stories: Treasures From the Museum’s Collection is a permanent exhibition featured at the Prince George’s African American Museum featuring art and artifacts from the Museum’s collection. The exhibit features a variety of donated objects since the Museum began its collecting program in 2011.

Through this program the Museum has collected nearly 300 objects including the call letters from Radio One’s headquarters building when it was located in Prince George’s County to the papers of an African American Soldier in World War I. At its core this exhibition is a collection of stories about the rich history and culture of Prince George’s County and its residents through their objects.

Blazz: Works on Blues and Jazz By Ulysses Marshall is about the Historical relationship between African American experience and two musical art forms blues and jazz. Using his signature “paper doll” style, Marshall inserts his own experiences growing up in rural Georgia into these pieces making this a personal series yet simultaneously exposing  universal humanistic themes. Ulysses describes Blazz as “Blues is the deep river within our souls that cries out the suffering and pain in our lives. Jazz is the raft that floated upon the river landing us safe on the shore.” The exhibition will be on display thru June 2014.

Joe’s Movement Emporium

Exhibiting Wayson Jones, Moons in Mountains: Painting and Collage This series of works straddles the lines between painting and sculpture, abstraction and landscape, and result from a work process that exploits the material properties of acrylic paints and gels. The predominantly monochromatic pieces can be "read" as minimalist abstract landscapes in which the viewers perspective shifts from one of looking down from the air to gazing at a distant and unclear horizon.
