Bowie Council Considers Walmart, Animal Shelter Proposal Monday

The Bowie City Council meeting begins at 8 p.m. Monday in Council Chambers at City Hall.

Walmart and a proposal for a city-run short term animal shelter are tow of the many items that will be considered by the Bowie City Council Monday at its regular legislative meeting.

Walmart Special Exception
Walmart is seeking the council's support in its application to the Prince George's County Planning Board for a special exception to build at 186,000 Supercenter at Mill Crossing in Bowie.

City staff has recommended that the council support the application, but the Bowie Advisory Planning Board has recommended the council deny the application. The council is expected to recommend the county planning board approve or deny the special exception at Monday's meeting following a public hearing on the matter.

City-run Short Term Animal Shelter
The city will also review staff recommendations on a city-run, short term animal shelter. Startup funds for the shelter are being provided by Bowie CLAW, the local animal welfare organization.

City staff are proposing to expand the current holding facility to serve as the short term shelter. The new space would be twice as large as the current holding facility with enough space for approximately four dogs and eight cats. There will be a public hearing on the shelter during Monday's meeting, and the item will be eligible for council action. Read the city staff's proposal on the shelter here
