Local Teen Alex Busch One Step Closer to Eagle Scout

The 17-year-old marshalled volunteers to replace an outdated walkway at the United Parish of Bowie.

Although the weather forecast predicted a soggy Saturday, the day remained clear and the many weeks Bowie resident Alex Busch spent planning, designing, and coordinating his Eagle Scout Community Service Project paid off, especially for the United Parish of Bowie.

The 17-year-old DeMatha High School student planned and executed an effort to remove an old flagstone path at the United Parish of Bowie and replace it with an integrated paver walkway.

Busch led the project and enlisted the help of members of his Boy Scout Troop 403 and adults from the church and community. He was observed all day by a senior Scouting representative and now Busch will prepare his final report on the project for presentation before a Board of Review before they determine if he is awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.

According to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) website, Eagle Scout is the highest attainable rank for member of BSA. Since the award was introduced in 1911, only two percent of Boy Scouts have been awarded this rank. There are several requirements that scouts must meet before qualifying to become an Eagle Scout, including earning 21 merit badges, completing a community service project, and being an active troop member.
