Summertime Pool Safety

Some tips on keeping your family swimming safely.

With schools out and warmer weather moving in this week, many folks will be making trips to their . 

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), drowning is a leading cause of preventable death for children under the age of five, with more than 70 percent of pool injuries occurring in backyard pools and spas.

The CPSC offers the following advice.

  • Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child when he or she is in or near water
  • Teach children basic water safety tips
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings 
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first
  • Fence pools with a four-foot or taller fence with self-closing and self-latching gates. Make sure pool gates are closed and locked, especially when not in use. Consider installing pool and gate alarms.
  • Keep life preservers, a first aid kit and a cell phone, on hand
