Get Out: Maryland Pollinator Week

Patch rounds up a few events you might want to check out this weekend.

As I’m sure you know by now, this week is Maryland Pollinator Week! Here are a few pollinator education events you might want to attend this weekend.

Bee, bird, and butterfly lovers will want to check out Destination Pollination—Exploring the World of Pollinators at 7 p.m. Friday at All Saints Lutheran Church. Biologist Kerry Wixted will discuss the many benefits of pollinators, their diversity, and the challenges they face. The event is free and includes light refreshments and door prizes.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is hosting a Butterfly Program at their Patuxent River Refuge at 10901 Scarlet Tanager Ct. in Laurel at 9 a.m. Saturday for ages 10 and over. The program is free, but you must call 301-497-5887 to register.

If bees are your pollinator of choice, check out this Bee Seminar on Saturday at the in Bowie. Maryland beekeeper Linda Thompson will tell you all about the importance of bees and how you can help them. The seminar is at noon and is free.

Don’t forget to hit the Bowie Farmers Market on from 8 a.m.-noon Sunday at Bowie High to stock up on fresh fruit and veggies for the week, all fresh and in season thanks to our local farmers and their friends, the pollinators.
