Excessive Heat Watch Extended Through Saturday

Residents are advised to reschedule strenuous outdoor actives to early morning or early evening.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended the Excessive Heat Watch in Prince George’s County through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Local residents will likely see temperatures around 100 degrees on Saturday with heat index values up to 110 degrees expected.

According to NWS, an Excessive Heat Watch indicates that a prolonged period of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

There is a risk of heat exhaustion or other heat-related illnesses for those without air-conditioning, or for anyone spending an excess of time outdoors is especially high. Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, avoid the sun, and check in on relatives and neighbors who may be at high risk for heat-related illnesses.

Extra caution is advised for those who work or spend time outside. Strenuous outdoor activities should be rescheduled to early morning or early evening to avoid heat related illnesses. NWS suggests lightweight and loose fitting clothing, along with frequent breaks in shaded areas or air-conditioned rooms.

Persons who are overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, so if it is suspected, dial 9-1-1 immediately.
