Taylor, Hendy Win Bowie Track State Titles

Taylor wins Class 4A shot put title for girls; Hendy takes high jump for boys at state meet at Morgan.

The Bowie High School track and field teams didn’t do well as groups, but the Bulldogs still came away with two state championships.

Antonella Taylor won a title for the girls, and took home one for the boys in the state championship meet for public schools this weekend at Morgan State in Baltimore.

Taylor scored all 10 of the girls’ points by winning the shot put. Her toss of 44 feet, 8.5 inches was enough for first place.

She came into the event as the top-seeded athlete and won easily, beating Tamara Ovejera of Thomas Johnson in Frederick County by exactly six feet, a large margin for this event.

Taylor also won the Class 4A South Region title the week before with little trouble.

Hendy turned in an impressive performance at the state meet, scoring 14 of Bowie’s 16 points.

He won the high jump with a leap of six feet, six inches. That was tied for the best jump in any of the four classes at the state meet.

This came after Hendy won the Class 4A South Region championship the week before with a jump of 6-2.

In addition, Hendy took fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.40 seconds.

The Bulldogs scored their other two points when their 3,200-meter relay team finished seventh in that race in a time of 8:14.41.

Jerome Brown, Joshua Wilkins, Donnell Davis and Gerardo Amaya combined to give the team those two points to finish with the 16 overall.
