Synthetic Turf Field Ready for Play in Bowie

The city's second synthetic turf field has been open for several weeks.

The new synthetic turf field at Whitemarsh Park in Bowie is officially open and ready for play.

Wet weather this spring caused some delays, but the field has been open for several weeks.

The entire process of grading the land, laying the turf and lining the field cos just under $900,000, though the city was able to obtain a state grant to offset about $150,000 of the cost, City Manager David Deutsch said in a previous interview.

The field should last about ten years, and replacement costs will only be at about 30 to 50 percent of the original cost of the field, according to Deutsch.

The city anticipates the field will be used for a variety of sports, including football and lacrosse.

There is a second synthetic turf field in the city at Allen Pond Park, wich was installed about three years ago.
