Bulldogs Fall Short in State Championship Track Meet

The Bowie High girls team finished seventh while the boys landed in 17th place.

The girls were hoping for a shot at the Class 4A state title at the championship meet on Wednesday at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover. But it just wasn’t their night.

The Class 4A meet is usually the toughest of all, and the Bulldogs just couldn’t do enough. Bowie finished with just 21 points and seventh place overall in a division loaded with tough teams.

Northwest (from Montgomery County) won the team title with 69 points, easily beating out Thomas Johnson (47). Eleanor Roosevelt, the long-time state power from Prince George’s County who beat Bowie by just two points in the region title meet last week, finished third with 39 points, beating out Old Mill by one.

The Bulldogs had good performances from a bunch of their athletes, but the big problem was that they just didn’t score as high as in the region and Prince George’s County meets. The high number of talented teams in this class made it harder to score points–and it’s why Class 4A is never an easy meet to win.

Charde Barnes took fifth in the 3,200 meters and sixth in the 800 and 1,600. Lexus Ramsey finished fifth in the 55 but also ran on the fourth-place 800 relay team.

Ramsey combined with Deborah Fajuyigbe, Briana Gooding and Maritza Travis on the relay. Kenyetta Louis was the other point-scorer for Bowie as she finished tied for sixth in the high jump.

The Bowie boys finished in 17th place with nine points in a very tight field. Duval, also from Prince George’s County, beat out Thomas Johnson by just one-half of a point for the team title.

Joshua Wilkins had the best Bowie performance, finishing fourth in the 1,600. Teammate Blake Anderson took sixth in the 500, and Steven Gilliam got eighth in the 55 hurdles.
