Bowie State Hoops Gains National Notice

Men's basketball team has been ranked among top teams at the Division II this season.

The Bowie State men's basketball team got off to a flying start this season.

Ranked among the top teams in the nation at the Division II level, the Bulldogs won their first three games of the season.

But that winning streak came to an end on Saturday in the title game of the 2011 Fresh Coast Classic in Milwaukee.

Denzel Mooney had a game-high 24 points to lead Lincoln University of Pennsylvania to the 74-72 upset of Bowie State.

“Lincoln realized what their strengths were and really played to the strengths and we didn't play to our strengths with our size and ability to get the ball inside,” BSU head coach Darrell Brooks, a former assistant coach at George Washington, said on the school's athletic website. “You have to give Lincoln the credit which is due and we'll live to see another day.”

The Bulldogs fell to 3-1 overall with the loss.

Travis Hyman and Jay Gavin each had 14 points to lead Bowie State. Gavin is a senior guard who played at Bishop McNamara and transferred to Bowie State from Division I VCU.

Darren Clark had 13 points and eight assists for the Bulldogs, who next play on Dec. 6 at home with California University of Pennsylvania.

Clark, from Largo High, is a transfer to Bowie State from Lincoln. Hyman went to Old Mill High in Anne Arundel County.

Bowie State was ranked No. 9 in the nation in the NABC/Division II poll in early November.
