Bowie Softball To Meet Urbana In State Semifinal

Bowie will play Urbana Tuesday at Bachman Park at 7 p.m.

The Bowie softball team will take on Urbana in a Class 4A state semifinal on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie.

The Bulldogs come into the final four with a 19-0 record after winning the South Region title last week. Bowie was the top-seeded team in its region and got a first-round bye. It then scored a 12-2 victory over Wise before routing Laurel (16-1) and then beating C.H. Flowers (10-3) to take the region crown.

But the Bulldogs are going to have to play an Urbana team that’s got good pitching and defense as the Frederick County school gave up only two runs in the regionals.

After a first-round bye, the Hawks beat Kenwood (11-1), Dulaney (4-0) and Westminster (3-1), whom they battle in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

The winner advances to the Class 4A state final on Saturday at Maryland.

Bowie’s baseball team also came into the regionals with high hopes, but the Bulldogs didn’t fare nearly as well. They were the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A South Region but, after a first-round bye, No. 10 seed  High Point ended Bowie’s season with a 6-3 upset win.

Also last weekend, Bowie’s track teams fared nicely in their regional meets.

The Bowie girls finished second in the Class 4A South Region. Bowie ended up with 80 points, behind long-time powerhouse Eleanor Roosevelt (113). The boys ended up third with 65 points in a meet that Oxon Hill won (104 points0.

Charde Barnes led the girls by winning the 3,200-meter run, finishing second in the 1,600 and third in the 800.

Evelyn Chappell won the high jump – with teammates Kenyetta Louis (second) and Cheyenne Lord (third) right behind to give the Bulldogs 24 points.

Antonella Taylor was the team’s other winner at that meet. She captured the shot put.

The Bowie boys got a big performance form , who won the 100-meter dash as well as the high jump.

All of these athletes move to this weekend’s state title meet at Morgan State in Baltimore. The Class 3A and 4A schools have the first day of their competition on Friday with about one-third of the events. Class 1A and 2A do the same thing on Thursday, and all four classes go on Saturday.
