Bowie's DeHenzel is key guard at William & Mary

Senior played hoops at St. John's in the powerful WCAC and is now among national leaders in steals at the college level.

The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro will host the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women's basketball Division I tournament for the second time this coming March.

And if all goes well Bowie resident Katherine DeHenzel will enter that tourney as one of the top scorers for William & Mary, a longtime member of the CAA, and one of the national leaders in steals.

DeHenzel, who played at St. John's in Washington, D.C, is a senior point guard who has started the first seven games this season for the Tribe. The Bowie product is averaging 32.3 minutes and 10.1 points per game for the Virginia school. She had 30 steals in the first seven games and had a team-high 37 assists.

"She tore her ACL her sophomore year" and missed the 2008-09 season, Tribe head coach Debbie Taylor told Bowie Patch. "This is her fifth year in the program."

"Last week she was leading the nation in steals. She has been so solid. She is doing a nice job of running the team this year," Taylor added.

DeHenzel had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 73-57 loss Sunday at Delaware in CAA play. Last year she averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 assists game and ranked eighth in the CAA in the latter category.

William & Mary is 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the CAA. Last year the Tribe was 3-26 overall under Taylor, who was 128-223 in 12 seasons at the school prior to this year. The team returned all five starters this season.

DeHenzel was a first team all-WCAC player as a senior at St. John's and scored 1,076 points in her prep career. She is the daughter of Cyndy and Robert DeHenzel. Her sister played soccer at Concord University and her father played football at Frostburg State.

Bowie State basketball

The women's hoop team at Bowie State lost its first four games this season. The team was led in scoring by Juliette Turner, who scored 16 points per game in contests through Sunday. Turner is a senior forward from Atlanta.

The Bowie State men's basketball team is slated to host California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are 3-1 overall this season.

The Salisbury football team lost 34-14 on Saturday at Wisconsin-Whitewater in the quarterfinals of the Division III tournament.
