Bowie High Football Prepares for Wise This Weekend

Bulldogs, coming off big win against Laurel, will face regional power on the road Saturday at 2 p.m.

Bowie High football is coming off a big win.

And the Bulldogs' opponent on Saturday, Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High, is coming off a last-second loss.

"That fuels a team," Terry Hayes, the Bowie High head coach, told Patch on Wednesday. Bowie plays at Wise in Upper Marlboro on Saturday at 2 p.m.

While Bowie had its way with Laurel on Saturday, Wise High lost 23-22 on a last-second field goal in Greenbelt against host Eleanor Roosevelt in a clash of top 20 teams in The Washington Post poll.

"They will be fired up," said Hayes, in his first year as varsity coach at Bowie after working as the junior varsity head coach at the school.

Wise fell to 2-1 with the loss on Saturday at Roosevelt under head coach DaLawn Parrish, a former college player at Wake Forest.

"We have a lot of young players," Parrish told Patch. "Just because they wear a Wise uniform does not mean you are going to win. We fell behind early (6-0). You have to finish."

"I was happy with the effort at the end, but disappointed we did not play four quarters," said Parrish, a graduate of Howard High in Howard County. "Sometimes a loss is a good loss. It makes us prepare better. Hopefully this puts us back on the right track."

Wise allowed 11 points in the fourth quarter to the Raiders.

Bowie, meanwhile, was tied at 6 with Laurel after one quarter on Saturday but scored 20 points in the second quarter to take a 26-12 lead.

The Bulldogs scored 24 points in the third quarter and eight in the final stanza for a 58-18 win.

Bowie had two interceptions, one each against Laurel quarterbacks Jarvis McClam and Tyler Harmon. McClam completed 15 of 37 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Harmon completed one of four passes for five yards and Joel Roberson completed his only pass for 27 yards and a score.

Bowie was led on the ground by running back Jamil Gilbert, who gained 114 yards on 10 carries with one touchdown.

The quarterback for the Bulldogs is senior Keonne Clayborne, who only had to make five throws against Laurel, according to Hayes.

Hayes said the Bulldogs need to make sure they do not make some of the mistakes, including penalties, that have taken place in the past two games against Oxon Hill and Laurel.

"We have to lock in and play four solid quarters," he said. That will be a challenge against Wise, one of the top programs in Prince George's County.
