Baysox Notebook: Florimon's Hot Streak Helps Baysox

He's got 11 hits in last five games to give offense a boost.

Pedro Florimon is getting hot, and the Baysox are glad to see it.

Florimon has taken off in the last week, going 11-for-18 in the last five games. That’s been his best streak of the season, and the Baysox can do better if he stays hot.

Florimon has two homers and eight RBI during this stretch. He’s been batting towards the bottom of the lineup and giving Bowie a lot of punch there—something the Baysox need since they’ve been inconsistent on offense throughout the season.

After going 3-for-4 with five RBI in Thursday’s 14-6 rout of Binghamton, Florimon’s average is up to .248 with six homers and 34 RBI. He’s struggled in different stretches this season but finally is coming on.

The Baysox need his punch in the lineup. He’s gotten three hits in three of the last five games – going 3-for-4 three separate times.

WELCOME BACK, JOE

Joe Mahoney is rounding back into form after missing much of the season with leg problems.

Mahoney’s average is at .274 after he homered in the 14-6 victory over Binghamton on Thursday night. He went 1-for-5 in the victory and has hit .250 in his last 10 games but seems to be finding his way.

The Orioles were hoping for big things from him this year. Mahoney had been named the team’s minor league player of the year in 2010, but the quad problems in his leg slowed him from the start.

He finally made it back in June and has played well. The Baysox have lacked timely hitting and power at times throughout this season, and Mahoney will likely give them some of both.

ALL-STAR PICKS

Three Bowie players were picked for the Eastern League All-Star Game set for July 13 in New Hampshire.

Caleb Joseph, Xavier Avery and Pedro Viola are scheduled to play in the game. There’s been some talk that Viola might be called up to the Orioles, which would take him out of the game.

Joseph is a catcher who’s batting .271 and been consistent throughout the season. Avery has become one of the Eastern League’s top leadoff hitter. He’s hitting .270 with 22 steals, and Viola is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in relief.
