Baysox Notebook: Bowie's Offense Looking for Consistency

Despite an offensive outburst in Friday's win against Erie, the Baysox (15-15) are batting just .235 as a team.

As Carlos Rojas crossed the plate on center fielder Xavier Avery’s RBI single during the seventh inning of , it appeared the Baysox’s offense—which had been struggling for much of the early part of the season—was finally starting to turn the corner.

Rojas’s run capped a seven-run inning during for Bowie, during which it erased a 6-5 deficit. All nine Baysox starters scored at least once during the game, including three multiple times, and seven of Bowie’s nine starters tallied at least one hit.

Yet just as the Baysox appeared to be finally clicking offensively, they closed their weekend series against Erie with just five combined runs in the last two games—both losses.

After racking up 11 hits in Friday’s win against the SeaWolves, the Baysox recorded just 11 combined hits Saturday and Sunday.

Bowie is hitting just .235 as a team, third-worst in the Eastern League (out of 12 teams), and is averaging just 3.7 runs per game, fourth-worst in the league.

Aside from outfielder Kyle Hudson, who has played in just five games with the Baysox since being promoted from Single-A Frederick, Bowie doesn’t have any other player batting better than .266.

Avery, the third-ranked prospect in the Orioles’ organization according to Baseball America, has a team-high 16 stolen bases, but is hitting just .220 and has struck out 35 times, and walked only six, in the Baysox’s first 29 games.

MAHONEY BACK ON THE DL

After sitting out Wednesday and Thursday’s games against Harrisburg, Baysox first baseman Joe Mahoney was placed on the disabled list Friday with a quadriceps strain. According to Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com, Mahoney, the Orioles’ 2010 Minor League Player of the Year, is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Mahoney had missed 14 games with a quad injury earlier in the season, prior to returning Apr. 28.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Mahoney, who hit .319 with 12 doubles, nine home runs and 29 RBI in 52 games with Bowie last season after being promoted from Single-A Frederick, is batting just .235 (8-of-34) with one home run and one RBI in 10 games with the Baysox this year.
