Baysox Notebook: Bowie Offense Starting to Turn Corner

Fueled by their recent offensive potency, the Baysox (32-31) have won six of their last seven games.

With , during which it jumped out to a dominant 10-0 third inning lead, Bowie (32-31) has now won six of its last seven games and once again moved back above the .500 mark on the season.

The Baysox offense, which had struggled for so much of the early part of the season, has also started to come together during the last seven games, averaging nearly seven runs per game in the Baysox’s six wins during that stretch.

Bowie entered June averaging just more than three runs per contest.

BRITTON TURNING IT AROUND, WARING STILL SURGING

Third baseman Buck Britton, who has also played second base and left field for the Baysox, has multiple hits in three of the last four games, posting hits in six of his 16 at-bats during that span. Britton, who was promoted to Bowie from Single-A Frederick in late May, had just one hit in his first 14 at-bats with the Baysox, and had been hitting just .071 as of May 27, but has upped his average to .250 and has tallied four extra-base hits, all doubles, in his last seven games.

Britton’s brother, Zach, a third-round pick of the Orioles in 2006, pitched for Bowie in 2010 and is now in the midst of his rookie season with the Orioles. He is 6-4 with a 3.18 ERA in 13 starts.

Fellow third baseman Brandon Waring, meanwhile, hit a three-run home run in the second inning of Sunday’s win against Portland—he finished the game with five RBI—and has now slugged four home runs in his last five games, tying him with right fielder Ronnie Welty for the team lead in home runs (8).

Waring is 6-of-11 with five runs scored, three home runs and seven RBI during his last three games. He has raised his batting average more than 30 points, from .156 to .188, since June 2.

Waring, a seventh-round pick of the Reds in 2007, hit at least 20 home runs in each of his previous four minor league seasons. He also batted at least .270 in each of his first three minor league seasons before hitting a career low .242 for the Baysox last year, although he did still slug 22 home runs.
