Baysox Notebook: Bowie in the Midst of Five-Game Losing Streak

After pulling to within one game of first place in the Eastern League, the Baysox dropped five straight games to Harrisburg during the weekend.

As Bowie hit the road for Harrisburg last Friday, the Baysox sat just one game behind the host Senators for first place in the Eastern League.

Yet five days, and five losses to Harrisburg later, the Baysox now sit six games back heading into the beginning of a six-game home-stand against Richmond and New Britain, which begins Tuesday.

Bowie (24-28) had won three of its previous four games prior to its series with Harrisburg, but was outscored by a combined 24-10 during the five-game series, including 17-4 in the first four games.

Although they posted six runs , the Baysox have been held to four runs or less in 15 of their last 18 games, including three or runs or less in 14 of those games.

Bowie is last in the Eastern League in runs per game (3.33). In comparison, Reading, which leads the Eastern League in runs per game, is averaging more than five runs per contest.

AVERY SURGING

While the offense may still be struggling as a whole, center fielder has shown signs of turning the corner during the last two weeks.

Prior to Sunday, Avery, who was batting just .219 May 17, had been batting .425 (17-of-40) in the previous 11 games, raising his average to as high as .262. He had at least one hit in each of those 11 games, including multiple hits in six of them.

Avery, who was rated by Baseball America as the third-best prospect in the Orioles’ organization, leads Bowie with 19 stolen bases.

Catcher Caleb Joseph leads the Baysox with a .280 batting average.

HOES COOLING OFF, BRITTON STRUGGLING

, rated as the Orioles’ fourth-best prospect by Baseball America, is hitless in the last five games, going 0-for-14 during that span, after going 7-of-16 (.438) in his first four games with the Baysox. He was promoted from Single-A Frederick last week.

Hoes batted .290 last season, between Frederick, Bowie and Single-A Aberdeen, but is now batting just .233 in nine games with the Baysox after hitting just .241 in 41 games with Frederick.

Third baseman Buck Britton, meanwhile, who, like Hoes, was promoted from Frederick last week, is just 3-for-17 (.176) since being called up. He had hit .341 with three home runs and 30 RBI in 25 games with the Keys.
