AUDIO: Bowie High Football Coach Shares His Experiences as a Player and Coach

Lionel Macklin discusses his days at South Dakota State University, his stint in the NFL, and coaching at Bowie High School.

Football has been paramount throughout Lionel Macklin's life.

Mr. Macklin played football at South Dakota State University from 1977-1979. He was a wide receiver for the Jack Rabbits and holds multiple receiving records to this day.

Macklin also had some playing experience in the National Football League as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. Macklin worked out frequently with Seahawks quarterback Jim Zorn. He later played for the Denver Gold in the United States Football League.

After serving for over a decade as an assistant football coach at , Mr. Macklin finally got the call and became the head coach in 2009. After an 0-3 start, Macklin led his team to a strong 5-2 finish, to complete his first season with a record of 5-5. In 2010, Bowie posted a record of 4-6 under Macklin.

Mr. Macklin lives in Bowie with his family. His son, Travis, played football for Bowie High School and recently graduated from Towson University. His daughter, Linnel, is .
