Snow isn't forecasted until after school starts.

By Greg Hambrick and Jenni Pompi

Updated, 8:45 p.m.: With weather forecasts predicting a 100 percent chance of snow Tuesday—up to 5 or more inches—Prince George's schools have decided to turn this four-day weekend into five days off for the kids.

PGCPS will be closed for students Tuesday, Jan. 21, due to the forecasted inclement weather. A Code Yellow is in effect—only emergency personnel should report for work.

The weather forecast in Prince George's calls for snow and temperatures falling into the teens Tuesday.

How does PGCPS make the decision to close schools for inclement weather, and how are parents notified? The school system outlines its policy as follows:

  • The superintendent generally makes decision concerning early morning school closings or delayed openings prior to 5 a.m.
  • An announcement is then provided to local media outlets in time for early morning broadcasts between 5 and 6 a.m.
  • Closings and delays are also updated on the school system webpage, www.pgcps.org. After 6 a.m., staff and parents can also access the school system's Voice Mail Bulletin Board by calling 301-952-6000. Wait for the opening message, and then press the number 1.
  • Closings and delays will also be announced on PGCPS TV on Comcast Channel 96 or Verizon FIOS Channel 38.
