UPDATE: Samuel Ogle Student Reports Abduction Attempt

The student told school staff that a man in a red sports car tried repeatedly to get her to go into his vehicle, but police were unable to confirm her allegations.

UPDATE - According to Prince George’s County Police spokesperson Cpl. Maria McKinney, after police interviewed the the victim, they were unable to verify her allegations based on her statements to investigators. Police decided to close the case unfounded.

School officials are reporting a possible abduction attempt Wednesday in Bowie.

At approximately 8 a.m. this morning, a man in a red sports car attempted to abduct a Samuel Ogle Middle School student as she was walking to her bus stop, according to a letter from Principal Mark Covington issued to the parents Wednesday afternoon.

According to Covington’s letter, the student was approached multiple times by the suspect, who asked her to get in his vehicle. The student refused and ran to her bus stop and the man drove off.

The student reported the incident when she arrived at school and staff at Samuel Ogle notified the Board of Education, surrounding schools and filed a report with the police, states Covington’s letter.

In the letter, Covington also asked parents to reinforce to their children that getting in vehicles with strangers is always a bad idea.

“I am very relieved that this student had the presence of mind to make the right choice and ignore the requests of the stranger. I believe this Is a good opportunity for all of us to remind our children that although the world is full of wonders, it also contains some danger,” wrote Covington.

Thank God she did not get in the car.... And thank God he did not get out of the car and force her into it. God is good!!!! Parents it's so important to inform your kids about not taking anything from strangers, not walking up to their car when they call out to you..... Some of these folks are so slick kids need to be educated!!! They will drive up close to the child and pretend they are lost and ask you for directions and as soon as you get close up on the car they force you in. Please please parents educate your kids!!!!

This is so scary! I live right by Samuel Ogle and the thought of this happening this morning as I was taking my children to school sends chills up my spine! Thank God this story has a happy ending!

So glad we got out of Bowie!

Yvonne this problem is everywhere...don't be fooled by bigger houses or bigger wallets. Bowie has some great people living here!
Miranda Mellin October 03, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Please don't be naive enough to believe this happened because it was in Bowie. This can happen anywhere. That is why we need to teach our children to be observant and cautious no matter hoe safe of a town/city we live in!

Leslie & Miranda< I didn't say anything about it not happening anywhere else. We are now living in SC. Very low crime rate and 1 of our neighbors leaves his garage open all night long! They'd have nothing left if they did that in Bowie! Also, the schools here in Lexington County issue Ipads for student use. How many do you think would not be returned in Bowie schools? We feel like we made a move for the better. Also don't get taxed as bad as in MD.

Thank God she is fine. As a parent who has a child who takes the bus a couple days a week do we know what neighbworhood this happened in? I know it can happen anywhere but i was just wondering what part of Bowie?
Tim October 04, 2012 at 02:44 AM
So where did this happen? The story is about a girl at her bus stop, so it was at least a mile away from Ogle. It would be helpful to know the neighborhood or general area of the attempted abduction.

Yvonne perhaps you did not experience Bowie as it truly is. I have lived in Bowie for 15 years. On several occasions I or my neighbors have left our garage open all night long with cars unlocked and nothing including our vehicles was missing. Maybe you lived somewhere with a Bowie "zip code" but the city that you were in was not really Bowie. Yes, the taxes in SC are less than most suburbs on the east coast; however, the opportunities in the DMV far surpass those that you will find anywhere else in the country.

@Tim.... I agree that they should tell us the neighborhood. We live 1.25 miles and the school made my daughter walk so I belive it is 1.5 miles or greater. And there are three or four Megan's law violators less than a mile from the school. And the police labled this "unfounded" only happens when the reported crime doesn't match the story/ evidence.

My daughter walks to school daily. We live about a mile away from Ogle. I am very concerned for her saftey walking to school in the mornings. I want to know if there are any private transportation services that will transport children to schools. I currently leave work and drive her to school a few days a week, but I could use this type of service if available. I also want to know why there are not more crossing guards on walking routes to Ogle. There are no guards on Whitehall road or the Millstream end of Chapel Forge dr. Where did this happen?

Whatntheworld, let me ask you where in Bowie do you live? We were in the R section which IS still quiet for the most part. Yet the beginning of the summer on a Sunday morning about 7am, my husband witnessed 2 males (probably late teens/early twenty's) walking up our street trying to open vehicle doors. The succeeded at a neighbor across the street's house and when my husband yelled at them one threw his hands in the air as if to say "what?" and calmly walked up the street. We call Bowie police and they came, after canvassing the area nothing came of it. The Bowie policeman told us they were probably just looking for spare change! Bottom line, these little incidents can happen anywhere. As far as the opportunities in the DMV being much better than other places in the nation, this is a matter of opinion. I grew up in Montgomery County and my family is from Baltimore so I've experienced both downtown DC (museums, etc) and also downtown Baltimore (Inner Harbor, etc). They both have pros and cons. We're very happy with the move we made. Of course we miss family and friends in MD. I do not miss living in Bowie or the DMV. It's such a nice change of pace to have people be friendly ALL the time no matter what the situation...grocery store, MVA (and the lack of ridiculous lines is nice too). Hope you enjoy living in Bowie, we did for the most part and now we are enjoying SC!

So Bowie children are thieves-in-training who cannot be trusted with expensive electronics? Remind me to perform a full-body search when my kids get home to make sure they haven't five-fingered anything at school. That's just offensive. Why come on a Bowie website and disparage the community and its residents?
PJ October 04, 2012 at 07:19 PM
This can happen anywhere....even where you are at!
PJ October 04, 2012 at 07:47 PM
I live in Bowie and I have left my garage door open all night long and all day long plenty of times.....and guess what.....EVERYTHING is still there. So, I guess your statement is not TRUE! Seems like YOU had a bad experience in Bowie and I will continue to pray for people with your mentality and blindness. Are IPads that important to you? What is especially SAD is that you DO NOT even realize how idiotic and uneducated you sound! Next time, try to keep those comments tight lipped.
Miranda Mellin October 06, 2012 at 01:56 PM
I agree with the comment above. If you are happy in SC and weren't in Bowie why are you on this site? I just don't see why you feel the need to come on here and bash the town we live in? I am raising my children here. I don't need to here your negative comments. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all!
