Prince George's School Year Extended Two Days

Prince George's County Public Schools will extend the school year by two days in June to offset snow days. There will be no change to spring break date.

The school year will run a little long in the Prince George’s County Public School system after the state waived only two days of school missed because of snowstorms.

The district was forced to cancel school eight times this winter, double the number of snow days built into the yearly calendar, prompting the district to ask for a state waiver.

Prince George’s County Schools Chief Executive Kevin M. Maxwell asked the state to waive two class days lost to inclement weather, which was approved Thursday. Maxwell had asked last week for the state to waive four days, so the school year wouldn’t have to be extended, but that request was denied.

District officials had built four inclement weather make-up days into this year’s school calendar. With the approved two-day waiver, the district will be able to hold classes 180 days this year. The two days added to the calendar are Thursday, June 12, which will be a full day of instruction, and Friday, June 13, which will be a half-day of instruction.

Spring break dates will not change, the district said. Schools will remain closed for students Monday, April 14, through Monday, April 21. The grading period will be adjusted accordingly. The last day for teachers will be determined at a later time.
