PGCPS CEO Named 2014 Maryland Superintendent of the Year

Prince George's County Public School CEO Kevin Maxwell has been named Maryland Superintendent of the Year by the Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland. 

“This is one of the highest honors I have received during my 35-year career in education,” Maxwell said in a statement. “When you are selected by your peers for such recognition, it is both a thrilling and humbling experience. I extend my sincerest thanks to my colleagues for their nomination.”

Maxwell, who is a resident of Bowie, was named PGCPS CEO in June after a nearly year-long search. He spent six years at the superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools before coming back to PGCPS, where he began his education career in 1978. 

He spent 22 years working for PGCPS—first as a teacher, then a principal and then as Chief Educational Administrator. Following that, Maxwell went on to serve as a Community Superintendent in Montgomery County Public Schools from 2004-2006 before moving on to AACPS. 

During his time at AACPS, Maxwell is credited for his leadership in increasing student achievement and with building partnerships with community groups and organizations.  

“Our Board and our school system congratulate Dr. Maxwell on this well-deserved award,” AACPS Board President Teresa Milio Birge said in a statement. “He and our entire organization have worked very hard to help propel our school system forward, and we are grateful for his seven years of service to our children.”

Maxwell said in a statement that he believes the award is a "reflection of the incredible work of incredible people in Anne Arundel County." 

“I believe the work we did together for our children has put them in better positions to have brighter, more successful futures, and that is the most important thing of all," he said in a statement. 

As Maryland Superintendent of the Year, Maxwell will serves as the state's representative in the National Superintendent of the Year program, which pays tribute to school leaders across the nation. The National Superintendent of the Year award winner will be announced in February.
