Local Teachers Voice Compensation Concerns

Several teachers expressed a need for an increase in pay at last night's Moving Forward Forum.

Local teachers voiced concerns about their compensation at Tuesday night’s  at , reported WTOP.

The forum, hosted by the Prince George’s County Board of Education, was intended to give local parents, principals and teachers the opportunity to learn more about the superintendent search process and offer comments and feedback, according to a Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) press release.

was in attendance at last night’s forum, as well as Verjeana Jacobs, school board chairwoman and District 5 board representative.

According to WTOP, both Crawley and Jacobs moved to assure the forum attendees the board would remain focused on student achievement, but the teachers had other concerns.

"At this point, we're at risk of losing our home because I can't afford to pay my bills," said teacher Dionne Lyles, according to WTOP.

Other educators raised similar concerns about teacher compensation during the forum.

Contract negotiations with PGCPS teachers are ongoing, reports WTOP.

There will be another Moving Forward program at 6:30 pm. Aug. 30 at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville.
