How Far Will Winter Snow Days Cut Into Summer Vacation?

Could the string of snow days this winter push the end of the school year run to June 13 in Prince George’s County?

The school system built four weather cancelation days into this year’s calendar, but Feb. 13 was the fifth time classes were called off because of bad weather this school year, reports Gazette.Net.

Maryland law says classes must be held a minimum of 180 days, but the state can grant waivers for school systems with significant weather-related cancellations. Officials with the Prince George’s County Public Schools will wait for winter to wrap up before deciding whether to request a waiver.

The four built-in makeup days run June 9-12. A fifth makeup weather day would likely make June 13 the last day of school, Gazette.net says.

That could put a wrinkle in families’ summer plans and in summer jobs for teens.

“A lot of camps have to be paid for before the school year ends,” said Earnest Moore, Prince George’s County PTA Council president. “Some parents may have to decide whether or not to take their kids out of school early.”

Employers who rely on workers in the summer, such as Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro, may have trouble with staffing when the school year is extended.
