Lecture on Early Maryland Marriage References by Bob Barnes

Come hear Bob Barnes on Saturday September 15 from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Maryland State Archives to learn about early Maryland marriage references. Mr. Barnes will be discussing all the ways in which genealogists and family researchers can find references to early Maryland marriages in addition to the standard research practice of examining church records. He will explain certain scenarios in which researchers may not be able to locate marriage records and how the study of different records such as administration accounts can be of assistance in finding references to marriages taking place in early Maryland. Admission is free, but donations to the Friends of the Maryland State Archives are welcome. This event inaugurates a new series of lectures and presentations at the Archives on topics of genealogical, historical and collecting interests.  Future speakers include Michael McCormick, Rebecca Koford, and Michael Hait.

Bob Barnes, M.Ed., F. M. G. S., is a writer, researcher, and lecturer. He has a master’s degree in Education from what is now Towson University. In June 1995 he retired from teaching after 36 years in the Baltimore City schools. He has spent a number of years working part time at the Maryland State Archives as a Reference Archivist and still does extensive research there. He has been tracing Maryland families since 1960.

He is the author of many source books, compiled family histories and guides, including Maryland Marriages, 1634-1777; Maryland Marriages, 1778-1800; Maryland Marriages, 1801-1820; Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759; and Guide to Research in Baltimore City and County. Among his recent works are two volumes of British Roots of Maryland Families, Maryland Marriage Evidences, 1634-1718, Colonial Families of Maryland: Bound and Determined to Succeed, and Biographical Data from Baltimore Newspapers 1817-1819.

He is the verifying genealogist for the Society of the Cincinnati in Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Society Sons of the Revolution. His job is to evaluate evidence submitted by applicants and verify its accuracy.

He has taught courses in genealogical research, given many lectures, and has been employed by several law firms and trust officers in tracing heirs of estates. He has been recognized as an expert witness in the field of genealogy by the Circuit Courts of Baltimore City and Montgomery County.
