Bowie State Hires New Provost

Weldon Jackson will serve as the new provost and vice president of Bowie state beginning in July.

With more than 27-years of experience in higher education and a history of advancing academics and research in institutes of higher education, Bowie State’s incoming Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Weldon Jackson seems more than qualified for the job.

“I am very pleased to have Dr. Jackson assume this critical leadership position as part of my Bowie State University team,” said University President Mickey L. Burnim in a press release. “He brings with him a wealth of experience, character and commitment to help us move Bowie State University to the next level of excellence.”

Jackson has a long list of professional achievements, which includes designing the student success center at Morehouse College and expanding technology use at Manhattan College.

In his new position at Bowie State, Jackson will oversee the university’s academic programs, including 23 undergraduate majors, 19 master’s programs, two doctoral program, and 12 certificate programs for a total of 5,600 students.

Jackson says he is excited to join Bowie State.

“It is a special privilege to join Dr. Mickey Burnim’s exceptional senior leadership team and the outstanding Bowie faculty and staff to continue our pursuit of ‘world-class pre-eminence’ in higher education,” said Jackson in a press release.

Jackson has a PhD from Harvard and an undergraduate degree from Morehouse College. He will begin his post at Bowie State on July 8.
