Bowie High Student Place Third in Poetry Out Loud Event
A Bowie High School student made it to the semifinal round of the state's Poetry Out Loud competition.
Aquilah Nelson, junior at Bowie High School, was among the top three regional winners of Poetry Out Loud who advanced to the state semifinals representing Prince George’s County Public Schools at the Maryland Institute College of the Arts.
“Congratulations to Aquilah Nelson for making it to the semi-final round of the competition,” said Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer for PGCPS. “Poetry Out Loud allows students to not only learn about poetry, but it gives them confidence while mastering public speaking skills.”
Participants recited works they selected from an anthology of more than 700 classic and contemporary poems. Students were evaluated on voice and articulation, evidence of understanding, level of difficulty and accuracy.
Poetry Out Loud is a partnership with the Maryland State Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation. It is a national program that encourage high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.
