Benjamin Tasker Welcomes New Principal

Ingrid Johnson comes to the school with more than two decades of experience in education.

With 26 years of experience in education and her training from the New Leaders Aspiring Principals Program, Ingrid Johnson is just the person to take to the next level.

According to their website the New Leaders Aspiring Principals Program “ trains tomorrow’s principals to turn around underperforming schools and the lives of the students who attend them.” About 23 percent of eighth-graders at Benjamin Tasker score less than proficient in reading on the Maryland School Assessment tests; around 48 percent are scoring less than proficient in math.

Johnson hopes to use her experiences and education to provide the students at Benjamin Tasker with all the opportunities they need so that they can be prepared for college and future careers.

“Some of our goals are to make sure our students have rigorous curriculum and also to open unique opportunities for enrichment around STEM with science and math,” said Johnson.  “They all have special gifts and it is our job to prepare them to use those gifts.”

In addition to her training with New Leaders, Johnson also has an undergraduate degree in special education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Penn State and a certificate of advanced graduate studies in administration from Regent University.

, allowing for an additional 40 minutes of enrichment or intervention. Students who are struggling will receive extra help in subjects like reading and math; students are are working at grade level will participate in enrichment programs.

Johnson said the program will be flexible and based on data that reflects individual student needs.

In addition to her focus on curriculum and preparing students for their futures, Johnson is also looking forward to getting to know the 900 students now in her charge.

“Establishing that personal relationship is important to me,” she said.
