DC, MD, and VA fencers from 13 to 70+ bring home 18 medals from National Fencing Championship in Columbus, Ohio

DC Fencers Club members made it to the medals stand 18 times at the USA Fencing Summer National Championships.  DCFC members ages 13 to 70+ earned four gold, four silver, two bronze, and eight additional finalist medals (for the #5-8 spots) at ‘Summer Nationals,’ the culminating fencing tournament of the 2012-2013 season.

DCFC sent more than 60 fencers ages 10 to 70+ to compete in this ten-day event in Columbus, Ohio.  Between June 28 and July 7, DCFC fencers competed among more than 4,000 fencers from clubs nationwide in numerous team and individual events in the three fencing weapons, epee, sabre, and foil.  Summer Nationals is hosted by USA Fencing, the national governing body for this Olympic sport. It is the largest fencing tournament in the world.

The event served as the final qualifying tournament for the 2013 Veteran World Championships in Varna, Bulgaria in October, as well as the first qualifying event for the 2014 Junior and Cadet World Championships.

In the first days of the tournament, DCFC veteran fencers set a high bar for the younger fencers to follow.  Former Veteran World Champion Kaz Campe (Edgewater, MD) won the 2013 National Champion title in Vet 70 Men’s Epee.  Jim Adams (Rockville, MD) earned gold in Vet 70 Men’s Foil, a repeat of his 2012 results. Peter Calderon (Plainsboro, NJ) won silver medal in Vet 70 Men’s Sabre and bronze in Vet 70 Men’s Epee.  Dick Richards (Burtonsville, MD) won the Veteran National Championship in Vet 50 Men’s Epee.  Janine Powers (Columbia, MD) also earned silver in women’s epee in the 40-49 age category.   With these wins, several DCFC vet fencers have qualified to represent Team USA at the Veteran World Championship in Varna, Bulgaria this October.

The younger fencers competing in Junior (Under 20), Cadet (Under 17) and Youth events also had great results at Summer Nationals.  Amanda Sirico  (Bowie, MD), who ended last season as the #1 ranked Cadet U.S. fencer, started the new season with a silver medal in the Junior Women’s Epee event.  Clinton Rodell (Annandale, VA), who was the 2013 Junior Olympic Cadet Men’s Epee Champion, garnered a silver in Cadet Men’s Epee.  Isaac Shelanski (Washington, DC) won his first-ever National Champion Title in Y14 Men’s Epee. Peter Souders (Silver Spring, MD), an alumnus of Boston College’s NCAA fencing team, won bronze in Division 1A Men’s Sabre.
